A quiet summer afternoon in Royal quickly transformed into a crisis situation Tuesday that drew in emergency personnel from across the area. At approximately 3:30 p.m., an explosion occurred in one of Ag Partners' cement elevators on the north side of Royal. The blast could be heard across town and scattered debris throughout the area immediately surrounding the business. Royal resident Rich Green was on Main Street at the gas station when the explosion occurred. He said "the whole building...
The start of a new school year is always hectic. Throw in a completely new building and an ongoing global pandemic, and you've got a recipe for potential disaster. Luckily, that hasn't been the case at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's new elementary school. The building opened its doors to students for the first time on Monday, and Principal Cathy Jochims has been pleased with what she's seen so far. "I think everything has gone very well," she said. "There have been some little kinks with things going...
The method of making up lost instructional time due to weather interruptions may be in for some changes this year. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Superintendent Patrick Carlin and school board members this month discussed how the district could use virtual [online] learning as a way of eliminating traditional "snow days" to make up lost time. The 2020-21 school calendar currently lists eight snow days: Dec. 23, April 5, May 21 and May 24-28. The May dates follow the scheduled end of classes on May 20....

A play area for younger students is located on the south side of the school while another for older students is northeast of the building. HMS PIE conducted a care closet and supply drive in the district during July and August....
Last week I restarted my in-home daycare. I typically do not take any time off; however, I had a teacher's child that does not need summer care and COVID-19 pretty much threw a wrench in the rest of my lineup. After careful consideration, I changed my daycare hours from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. I have only endured this change and its benefits for one week, but Lord almighty what a difference! I am waking up at 5 a.m. to do my daily 10k so that I can be back and ready for the day before...
I'm a "go with the flow" kind of guy – I usually row with the current, not against it. But I recently experienced something that ruined my day, and I feel the need to expound on it. You know how bread wrappers are usually closed with those little wire twisty things? You wouldn't think there is anything about them that could upset a person. Most of them are innocuous little wire ties that you simply unwind to grab a couple of pieces of bread to make your morning toast with. Here is where the t...
Derecho. A word you probably haven't heard often, and frankly haven't seen enough coverage of. In Iowa, lives have been lost, farms upended, and communities ravaged at the hands of a derecho. Cedar Rapids, our state's second largest city, is demolished. Communities and rural areas across Iowa have been devastated. Folks are without power, and have been for seven days. I was on the ground with the National Guard in 2008 responding to the devastating floods, and folks, what I'm seeing now - it's...

Miss Lacher was better able to serve her many customers in the larger and modern location where the fixtures were the latest in design and the store was arranged to make shopping a ple...
