The fastest way through Hartley has not been a straight line over the past week. Crews have been busy resurfacing a stretch of Highway 18 that runs from the east edge of town to the west edge. Work started on Aug. 24 with surface milling and is expected to wrap up by the end of the week when the new asphalt is completely poured. Students at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn were greeted by several new teachers when they entered their classrooms last week. Thirteen new instructors and one new principal joined the H-M-S staff roster this year. Though some have an extensive background in education, others in the group are enjoying their first year in the classroom. Exhibitors shear to please judges at Iowa State Fair Alex Moser, of Larchwood, won first place in the Senior Division of the Sheep Shearing Contest judged on Saturday, Aug. 13, at the 2022 Iowa State Fair. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced on Monday the first confirmed case of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus Type 2 (RHDV2) within the state. The disease is not considered a risk to humans or other animal species, including cats and dogs, but it is highly contagious and deadly to rabbits. The confirmed case is in Story County.
