  • CC/E board mulls open enrollment requests

    A long list of open enrollment requests created debate for the Clay Central/Everly school board on Aug. 28. Twenty applications were submitted for approval prior to the meeting. Of that list, four students had attended CC/E last year. The rest either recently moved into the district from another, were older than sixth grade, or lived in the district but did not attend CC/E in the past.   • Gift cards spread cheer to Everly flood victims

    Christmas came early last week for Everly residents affected by recent flooding. Members of the library board handed out gift cards across town to people who experienced water damage in June. The gifts were made possible by disaster recovery grants from the Clay County Community Foundation (CCCF), which has been doling out funds to local non-profit organizations in the wake of the flood.     James Vogt was busy Tuesday afternoon demolishing the former Real Reflections building in downtown Hartley. Also demolished that afternoon was the front of the former Create-A-Craft building directly to the north. A majority of the structure was removed last fall, which uncovered irreparable issues with the hair salon's adjoining wall. Also on Vogt's slate was the garage behind the former Capitol Theatre.     Lori Heemstra, of O'Brien County, was inducted into the 2024 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair, on Sunday, Aug. 18. Ninety-three Iowa counties participated this year and selected 125 inductees for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees or their surviving family members were presented a certificate by Iowa 4-H Foundation President Jeff Murphy and State 4-H Program Leader Mitchell Hoyer as they were introduced on stage....

The kindergarten class that numbered 42 students was separated into morning and afternoon sections. The overall enrollment was 490.     A shortened 2024 Junior Golf Academy was held at the Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club June 11-12 with 26 young golfers attending. After just two days of learning, the event was rained out and subsequent flooding at the course made it impossible to complete the academy safely.     Every boys' cross country runner from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn finished with a faster time at this year's Deb Hankens Invitational at Cherokee than they ran a year ago.
