  • Failing the test

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Sep 10, 2020

A shortage of COVID-19 testing material has officials at Community Memorial Health Center worried the facility will soon fall out of compliance with federal guidelines. CMHC recently received a rapid coronavirus-testing machine from the federal government to quickly test staff and monitor potential infections. However, since O'Brien County's COVID-19 positivity rate is more than 10 percent of those tested, staff must be scanned once a week with a 48-hour turnaround for results. CMHC's original...

Three years ago their dream became reality when the friends started the Northwest Disc Golf League, a traveling club that covers areas all over northwest Iowa ranging from Spencer, Royal, Emmetsburg and Lake Park all the way to Laurens, Sanborn, Okoboji and Cherokee. The group is the only traveling league in the area and meets every Thursday night to p...

  • Getting closer to crunch time

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Sep 10, 2020

Registered voters should be on the lookout for absentee ballot request forms in their mailboxes this month. Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate is sending the forms to active registered voters ahead of the November election to encourage social distancing at polling places during the COVID-19 pandemic. The tactic was used in June during the primary election, resulting in a record turnout in the Hawkeye State as more than 500,000 votes were cast. The previous record was set at 449,490 in 1994....

  • S-N Editorial: The way we were

    Sentinel-News Staff|Sep 10, 2020

If you're old enough, you probably remember where you were 19 years ago tomorrow when you heard the news. Two planes had hit the Twin Towers in New York City and another crashed into the Pentagon. Yet another fell short of its target in a Pennsylvania field thanks to the heroics of the passengers on board. Once the buildings fell and the fires were put out, 2,977 people were dead and many more wounded. Two wars followed, one of which continues to this day. You probably also remember how united...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Sep 10, 2020

My house is constantly being invaded. From carpenter ants in the spring to the ever-present daddy long legs in the corners of our ceilings, I'm always on the look out. This summer was no different. The dreaded carpenter ants crawled in sometime around late summer followed by their grease ant counterparts in June and July. If you're unfamiliar with latter, Google them – they are diabolical. Despite all the "friendly" faces, I found myself battling a new, yet familiar, foe last month. Paper wasps...

Cool weather, both unexpected and unseasonal, descended on Hartley, causing many local householders to fire up furnaces and start stoves. Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 10, 2020

Playing a rated team on its home floor was the challenge the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team faced as it traveled to Orange City on Sept. 1 to take on Unity Christian. The Knights were rated No. 4 in the initial Class 3A rankings released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. They lived up to that ranking with a convincing 3-0 win (25-10, 25-7, 25-12) over the Hawks. It was Unity Christian’s opening match of the season while H-M-S lost its second War Eagle Conference match on consecutive nights. The Hawks struggled to put down a...

  • Still 1 point short

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Sep 10, 2020

The final score of this year's football game between Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Sibley-Ocheyedan was different, but the result was just like their 2019 matchup: a one-point win for the Generals. And as they did last year, the Hawks allowed the go-ahead touchdown in the second half and eventually fell short, 19-18, Friday night at Sibley. "It was disappointing to say the least," Hawk coach Tyler Horkey acknowledged. "We had opportunities to capitalize, and we couldn't." Both teams' initial...

"From the first meet to the second, there was an incredible amount of improvement," Hawk coach Nicole Dorhout said. "They all shaved time off their result, which is great to see. We also had several runners who ran faster this year at Okoboji than they did last season." Madison...
