Though closing credits may have rolled decades ago on the last scary movie to play at the Capitol Theatre, it doesn't mean the building can't put on one final horror show for Hartley taxpayers. On the advice of legal counsel, the city council on Monday voted to acquire the property from Dwight and Darla Jacobs, of Spirit Lake. The city will obtain the property located at 185 S Central Ave. via quitclaim deed in the near future, and the Jacobs will also have to fork over a $2,500 payment under...
Bruce Morrison's beautiful paintings and photographs aren't for the birds – they're just of them. The rural Hartley artist has made a second career out of all things winged. From mighty hawks and eagles to tiny finches and warblers, there's no end to his feathered fascination. "As a kid, I used to hike the railroad out of town to a friend's farm where I'd lie down in a pasture and watch the red-tailed hawks fly above," he recalled. "Watching them in flight, it just looks so effortless. They c...
A rural May City man is putting the "business" back in Business Corner. Nick Shaffer recently erected a new building near the intersection of county roads A34 and M18 northeast of May City. The facility will eventually house 300 Acres, LLC, Shaffer's growing seed dealership and farm goods business. Shaffer previously operated the business from his acreage, but space started getting tight in recent years thanks to a growing customer base. "I started looking for land, but I didn't want to be...

Superintendent of Public Works Jaron Benz isn't concerned that the only thing to change recently at Hartley's new industrial park is the weeds. The 20-acre site was set to get paved last month, but only dirt remains. Benz said that's not a problem – crews are slated to return to Hartley within the next week and hopefully finish the job. "Whether that's going to happen or not, I'm not 100 percent sure," he said. "They worked before Labor Day and were hoping to return, but didn't. Whether t...

Several Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn runners recorded season-best or lifetime-best times at the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invitational on Sept. 4 at the Sibley Golf Course. Junior Madison Otto led the girls' cross country team, earning a medal and shaving time off her performance from the same meet a year earlier. Otto finished 16th in a tough field. "Madison looked extremely good," Hawk coach Nicole Dorhout said. "She's getting stronger and stronger and is improving her racing skills. She ran more than 30...

Mistakes and missed opportunities eventually caught up with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's football team during a 20-12 loss to South O'Brien on Sept. 11 at Peterson Field. The game marked the beginning of Class A District 1 play for both teams. Since the Hawks scored all their points in the first half and the Wolverines' all came in the final quarter, it might seem that each team won a half. But Hawk coach Tyler Horkey didn't see it that way. "It wasn't a tale of two halves," he said. "We made so...

Here in Clay County, however, there is truly nothing comparable to the almost-autumn smells and sounds of fair time. COVID-19 has struck another blow to our calendars, making this the fifth cancelation of the World's Greatest County Fair in history. For those of us that live and breathe...
