There was no ribbon cutting or parade, but a massive and important infrastructure upgrade project in Everly is now finished. Work on the city's sewage treatment ponds is finished after more than a year of construction. The project was years in the making, with momentum finally carrying it to the finish line over the past three years. Mayor Brad Behrens was happy and relieved to see things wrap up. "My No. 1 main goal as mayor coming in was to get this done and see it through," he said. Engineer...

  • Everly council mulls federal ARPA funds

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Sep 23, 2021

The Everly City Council on Monday debated what to do with $40,981 in free money, but answers were few and far between. The chunk of change came courtesy of the federal government as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which was passed by Congress earlier this year to provide $1.9 trillion in economic stimulus to help offset pandemic-related losses. Everly will receive another payment worth a similar amount in the near future to bring its total to $81,963. The money must be spent by 2024; however, it comes with strict stipulations....

ISU Extension & Outreach field agronomist Joel DeJong says farmers are in for a wild ride when they harvest their crops this fall. With a growing season marked by hot temperatures and sparse precipitation, he expected yields for corn and soybeans will be all over the board. Some farmers will set personal bests while others will come in well under average. "The range is very wide this year," DeJong said. "Precipitation varied widely around the [area], with some neighborhoods very short during...

  • Letters: Tie red ribbons to trees to honor U.S. troops

    Sep 23, 2021

To the editor: As a young lieutenant, my father, V. LeRoy McCarty, led his men off the D-Day beach and on, behind enemy lines. During the Battle of the Bulge, three of Dad’s men were captured by the Nazis. Fortunately, Dad and his men later liberated a concentration camp where his brother-soldiers were interred. Amidst the Vietnam involvement, my parents tied yellow ribbons on the trees to remind us to pray for a family member held in a prison camp. Why not reseed the policy and tie red ribbons, representing American flesh and blood, t...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Sep 23, 2021

I'm not an overly adventurous guy. I enjoy experiencing new things once in a while, but I generally stick to what I know. With that in mind, you can imagine how out of my element I was earlier this month driving the Hana Highway on Maui Island. Kaity and I decided to take the route during our honeymoon in Hawaii, and though it was beautiful, I bit off way more than I could chew. I had never heard of the thing until Kaity brought it up after we landed. Here's a brief description from the blog...

Expansion was Big 12’s only choice Sometimes you’re against the wall and the only way out is through it. Just ask the Big 12 Conference. The league, of which Iowa State is a member, was thrown into turmoil this summer when Oklahoma and Texas announced they would soon be fleeing to the money-green pastures of the Southeastern Conference. With bigger names and more TV revenue, the decision was driven completely by the almighty dollar. Both OU and UT already rake in cash and the opportunity to make more was simply too enticing to ignore. That lef...

  • World's Greatest Comeback

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Sep 23, 2021

We waited, somewhat impatiently. We kept going, sidetracked with finding a new normal amidst the whirlwind of daily life. Two years. Then all of a sudden, the musky summer air turned into a crisp, post-Labor Day calm. Summer's hustle slowed and gave way to The World's Greatest County Fair. Locals started traveling the fairground route in early September just to see the spectacle take shape. 4-H'ers brought in exhibits, fair staffers cleaned buildings and readied grandstands, the stage was built...

Scheider, pastor of the Hartley and Everly Methodist churches for four years, was transferred to the Galva-Silver Creek charge. Rev. S.A. Kruschwitz was...
