Rain might have dampened Friday's schedule, but school spirit still soared high last week for Homecoming at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. Friday's parade was shelved due to an ongoing rainstorm. However, the Hawks made the most of it during the raucous pep rally. Grades from kindergarten through 12, along with community members, packed the gym to get pumped up for the Maroon and Gold. The Homecoming schedule culminated with the football game against Kingsley-Pierson, which was also affected by rain....
Residents in Hartley and Everly will have choices to make when they hit the polls Nov. 7. Voters in both cities will be handed a contested ballot. In the City With a Heart, Greg Cotter, Matt Dolphin and Kenneth Embrey are vying for two open seats. Cotter has served on the council for the past two months after filling the vacancy left by Roxann Swanson, who resigned to accept the city administrator's position. Current Council Member Jerry Olson chose not to seek re-election. Elsewhere on...
The new paint scheme on Royal's water tower looks good from a distance, but close-up inspection indicates there may be problems. The recent paint job came under scrutiny during the city council meeting on Sept. 13. Council members reviewed photos of the structure that was painted in June by Central Tank Coatings. Photos taken by Iowa Lakes Regional Water, the operator of Royal's water utility, indicate several issues due to not enough paint coverage. According to discussion, there are exposed...
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School is exploring implementation of a School Resource Officer program with the cooperation of two cities in the district. A draft 28E agreement with the City of Hartley was reviewed by the school board on Sept. 18. Superintendent Patrick Carlin said the district is also seeking a similar agreement with the City of Sanborn. The SRO program's purpose is to "help maintain a healthy and safe school environment which will promote public health, safety and...

Selected for academic awards at BVU Nine business students and nine science students at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake have been selected for the Clifford A. Rae Academic Achievement Award for the 2023 academic year. The awards range up to $9,500 and were created by two separate endowments from foundations established by Dr. Harold Walter Siebens and named after the long-time advisor and counsel to Siebens and the foundations. The endowments support annual awards for up to three...
My coaching portfolio grew this fall with addition of flag football. This wasn’t exactly by choice, but my stint on the sidelines has been an interesting one nonetheless. I coached my son’s T-ball team here in Hartley for the past two summers. While it’s hard to measure progress of 5- and 6-year-olds, they seemed functional with a baseball, bat and glove by the end of the season. We coaches sometimes felt like we were herding rabid cats, and the young sluggers certainly kept us on our toes – never cast your gaze astray when kinderg...
Accentuate the positives when you can Progress comes in all shapes and forms. Just look around at our local communities. In Hartley, progress took the form of demolition last month when city’s never-opened new pool had its never-used deck torn up. The goal is to pour a new one with proper electrical bondings in place and inspected. Failure to inspect the bondings one year ago led to its indefinite closure, which has been a sore topic here in the City With a Heart. Everyone just wants the pool they paid for and hopefully we’re on the right track...
Many decades ago, Mrs. Gentry and Mr. Halferty put up with an inquisitive kid’s classroom questions about American democracy and the workings of government. I did not imagine back then how the meaning of some words could take on such importance in government. Take, for example, a much-talked-about word in Iowa last week, vexatious. It means abrasive, aggravating, annoying, irritating or nettlesome. Whether you vote for Democrats, Republicans or Whigs, everyone should have access to government re...
Roughly three months after our country exceeded $32 trillion in debt, we have surpassed another grim milestone and broken another unfortunate record. Our national debt has officially eclipsed $33 trillion, which is now the highest debt burden in American history. To put this figure into perspective, every single American – all 340 million of us – shoulders nearly $100,000 of this debt. Even worse, at a time when our federal budget deficit is projected to double to $2 trillion this fiscal yea...
Q: What’s your take on the budgeting process in Washington? A: It’s broken. As a taxpayer watchdog and ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, I continuously look for ways to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure the government is working effectively for the American people. As Congress approaches the end of the fiscal year, lawmakers are chewing over annual spending bills that fund government operations - including federal agencies, the military, and the judiciary – and a number of federal programs. This funding is referred to as discr...
• Sept. 30, 1948 The new lunch room at the Hartley Public School was able to seat from 125 to 150 people. The building was brought to the school grounds in sections and was assembled by the farm shop students. It had a modern kitchen with electric stoves and dishwasher, and a modern workable double sink. Excavation prior to the pouring of the foundation was started on the new home of The Goetsch Co. The new structure was being erected on Highway 18, just east of the Burns Chevrolet Co. The building followed the style of the many M...

This week the Clay Central/Everly Mavericks are stepping out in style for Homecoming week. The week holds many fun events including poster contests, hallway decorating, flag football and an alumni-run cheer camp (pictured at bottom). Highlighting the schedule is the parade Thursday (today) at 1:30 p.m. on Royal's Main Street, and pep rally to follow. The week will end with awards for dress-up and poster contest winners and a teachers-versus-students kickball game. The public is welcome to...
Fifteen teams competed for the top spot last Saturday during the Hartley Community Center's Second Annual Bags, Brew & Food Trucks Too fundraiser. Inclement weather moved things inside during the event, which not only featured a bags competition but also three food trucks – La Bamba, Hunger Struck and Gobblestop. Guests also had a chance to watch the Iowa State/Oklahoma State and Iowa/Penn State football games throughout the afternoon and evening. Approximately $1,800 was raised for the c...
Set scores kept getting closer but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was unable to overtake Remsen St. Mary's in a War Eagle Conference match on Sept. 21. St. Mary's (1A No. 10) swept H-M-S by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-23. "I really felt like we did a lot of good things against a solid team," Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese observed. "Our passing was consistent and we were constantly getting a hand on the block." During the final set, H-M-S cut the margin to two or three points but St. Mary's would respond and e...
Sioux Central runners were just a bit too fast for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn to catch in the boys' team race of the H-M-S cross country meet. The meet was held Sept. 18 at Sanborn. The Rebels won the meet with 40 points and the Hawks were a close second with 45. MMCRU and George-Little Rock/Central Lyon rounded out the team scoring with 63 and 66 points, respectively. George Vargas led H-M-S with a sixth-place finish, running a time of 18:49. Damian Dodge placed 10th, 20:10; Aiden Bush was 11th, 20...
When an athletic team is struggling to win games, any "firsts" are important. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn achieved some of those during its Homecoming game on Sept. 22. H-M-S scored the initial touchdown, led at half time and led at the end of the third quarter – all for the first time this season. But those accomplishments were not enough as Kingsley-Pierson scored twice in the final period to earn a 34-24 win. The Hawks' early success was due to the style of football they played. "I thought that w...
