    Iowa Assessment results for 2020-21 indicate that Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn students generally tested at or above state averages. But those scores do not provide a complete picture because of a lapse in testing a year ago due to the coronavirus pandemic. Information presented at the school board meeting on Sept. 20 shows third and fourth graders' proficiency was above state averages for English Language Arts and math, as was that of freshmen and juniors.     Homecoming festivities at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn kick off next Monday and run through Friday, when the Hawks take on Hinton at Peterson Field at 7 p.m. Coronation is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 5 in the H-M-S Event Center at 7 p.m. The pep rally is set to begin Friday, Oct. 8 at 12:45 p.m., with the parade to follow at 2:15 p.m. in downtown Hartley.     • Oct. 3, 1946 Workmen began tearing down the old warehouse of the Botsford Lumber Co. adjacent to the Milwaukee tracks, south of their office. A new warehouse was to be erected at the same location. A 12x16 cement block building was erected by the Modern Dry Cleaners.     Scoring on six straight first-half possessions, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn rolled past Alta-Aurelia, 66-22, Friday night at Peterson Field. The win kept the Hawks atop the Class A District 1 standings with a 4-0 record.     Unable to consistently string points together, the home team came up short in three pool matches during the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball tournament on Sept. 25.
