The Royal skyline is looking different for the second time in a year. Five new metal grain bins were added this summer to replace former concrete structures, one of which sustained heavy damages last year during a grain dust explosion. According to Dan DeJong, Ag Partners VP of Operations, ground excavation for the new bins began in mid-January following the demolition of the old structure. Minor work remains, but the Royal site is open for corn and soybean receipts this fall. "We still have...

This week provides local students, businesses and workers an opportunity to brush up on their safety skills during National Fire Prevention Week. The annual event focuses on raising awareness about what to do when the unthinkable happens, but it also gives us the chance to commend area emergency personnel for their service to the community. It's easy to forget about them. After all, it's not every day we have an emergency. However, the selfless commitment these men and women give to our...
Personal expectations for my favorite sports teams usually sit somewhere between “middling” and “low.” This is a rather pitiful mechanism of self-protection: When they do well, I’m surprised; when they do poorly, that’s what I thought would happen. Accordingly, you can imagine how thrilled I’ve been with the recent success of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Our 5-0 football team is ranked No. 3 in the AP Poll and has a tenacious defense capable of putting any team in the cellar for four quarters. With a massive matchup against No. 4 Penn State in Iowa City...

To the editor: We want to thank the citizens of Everly for your true Iowa spirit demonstrated by your acceptance and kindness to a stranger. I am referring to a recent member of your community, Steve Slater. Steve was a cousin to my husband, Gerry. Steve passed away in June and is now a resident of heaven. Steve lived in New Hampshire for many years and fought the crowds and the rat race traffic on a daily basis. Four years ago, Steve spent his vacation with us. He loved the rural atmosphere, the friendliness that was expressed by the guys he...

• Oct. 10, 1946 Lawrence Clark, superintendent of the municipal light and water plant, resigned his position here. He had accepted a similar position at Broken Bow, Neb. Mr. Clark had done much to develop the municipal plant during his tenure from early 1944. He also took an active part in civic affairs. New uniforms were ordered for the 50 members of the Hartley school band. It was difficult to even make a guess as to when delivery would be made as there was a scarcity of materials. The uniforms cost in the neighborhood of $1,200. All H...
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn knew what was coming when West Hancock had the football, but that didn't make it easy to stop them. Class A's No. 1-ranked team rushed for 354 yards on 66 attempts while preventing H-M-S [No. 10] from having any offensive consistency during a 20-6 win last Friday at Britt. Hawk coach Jay Eilers was most disappointed that his players' hard work and effort didn't pay off with a victory. "We came here to win and we didn't quite get it," he said afterward. The Hawks did not...

Getting an early jump on Unity Christian in two sets gave Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn reason to get excited, but that momentum proved to be short-lived. The Knights (3A No. 10) quickly rebounded to earn convincing 25-10, 25-10, 25-12 wins to complete the War Eagle Conference sweep. The Hawks led 4-1 in the first set and 3-1 in the third, but could not sustain either advantage. Unity Christian pulled away in both sets as H-M-S could not string points together. The Knights, who finished the match with...
