Activity was bustling this week at Hartley's never-opened new pool. Crews were busy pouring concrete on the deck. Work got underway Monday and was slated to continue throughout the week. "It feels really good seeing things progress," said City Administrator Roxann Swanson. The previous concrete deck was removed in August and September, along with rebar. Workers tied new rebar this month in preparation for the big pour. The redo was necessary due to errors made in the original construction proces...
A state-mandated policy to address threats or incidents of violence is now in effect at the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District. Legislation signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds in May required the Iowa Department of Education to develop a model policy for public school districts and charter schools. Final language released in September is intended "to help districts develop policies that describe how they may discipline a student for making a threat of violence or causing an incident of vio...
One agreement was approved while action on two others was tabled by the Royal City Council on Oct. 11. Acceptance of the compliance agreement for the lift station generator project included authorization of a partial payment. Royal was awarded a grant of $35,070 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to fund the project. One condition of the grant is that the city must pay half the cost of the generator before it is ordered. The council approved a payment to Power Solutions, Inc., of Alta, in the amount of $13,447.65. The annual...

The department recently placed new requirements on the water-use permit for the Osceola County Rural Water System to prevent the river from drying up, which has now happened five times in the past eight years. Ed Jones, an Osceola County supervisor who lives near the dry segment of the river,...

On Friday, Oct. 6, the world watched in horror as Hamas terrorists launched an all-out assault on Israel. Terrorists parachuted into a music festival killing hundreds of innocent people, broke into homes murdering entire families, and in one of the most gruesome displays of evil, murdered innocent babies. The details are sickening, but we cannot turn a blind eye to the atrocities that Hamas has committed and continues to inflict on the innocent people of Israel. The truth must be widely known....
In a time of intense division in Washington, one thing Republicans and Democrats still agree on is that no child should ever go to bed on an empty stomach. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, helps ensure that does not happen. But, with rising prices hitting hard and tens of thousands of families across the country waiting in a backlog to be approved for aid, some administrators of the program are jumping the line to snatch up the SNAP dollars, either...
There are moments in my life that stay with me for no apparent reason. Some are national events that everyone seems to know about, and some are personal events no one knows about. There are also moments I can’t remember, but others won’t let me forget. I have been around for several decades of our nation’s history, and probably the first big news story I remember was the Russian launch of Sputnik. There was a lot of talk about a Cold War and a space race, but as a young boy, I didn’t underst...
• Oct. 21, 1948 Sixty pies were distributed at the Council Oak store in Hartley during a demonstration of how to prepare apple pie with Becky Crocker Apple Pyequick. Jack Harmon, a representative of General Mills, was the presenter. The pie distribution was the fastest of any Council Oak store in Iowa or Nebraska. In spite of the fact that farmers throughout the area were busily engaged in corn picking, good-sized crowds attended the Fall Appreciation Days in Hartley. Events included a pet, bicycle and wagon parade, produce contest, pancake f...
The boys' cross country team at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn has recorded some notable accomplishments in the past, including two individual all-conference champions. But prior to this season, H-M-S had never won a conference team title. So history was made when the Hawk boys topped the team standings of the 2023 War Eagle Conference cross country meet on Oct. 10 at Paullina. H-M-S finished first with 53 team points, out-distancing George-Little Rock/Central Lyon with 70 and Akron-Westfield and MMCRU...
Teams whose offenses are predicated on controlling the line of scrimmage battled in the wind and rain Friday night at Peterson Field. Gehlen Catholic would win the fight, scoring a late touchdown in each half to hand Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn a 16-8 loss. H-M-S landed the first blow, scoring on a 60-yard run by James Gellerman. "We were able to run power early," Hawk coach Jay Eilers noted. "I thought James did a great job. I felt like they had somebody there second level, and James just made a...
A letdown in the third set of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's home volleyball match with MMCRU may have been the turning point in a 3-1 loss. The Royals won the War Eagle Conference match on Oct. 10 by scores of 22-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-21. Things started well for the Hawks, who used a late rally to win the first set. After playing evenly during the second set, the Royals pulled away to tie the match. The Hawks had an opportunity to regain the momentum in the third set. They went ahead midway into the...
Royal Chief Matt Goyette came to visit Clay Central/Everly Elementary students Tuesday morning to discuss the importance of fire safety. He encouraged the children to sleep with the door shut, knowing that this has saved countless lives by keeping the fire at bay and buying firefighters more time to save whoever is inside. He suggested the students make a fire escape plan for their home and to never play with flammable items. He also sent the children home with educational materials for the...

Haack was appointed to the board in January of 2017 to succeed Jill Zeutenhorst, who had resigned. He was elected to his current four-year term in 2019. Vollink read a statement from Haack which expressed his thanks for the opportunity to...
