    On Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021, James (Jim) J. Bryant, loving husband and father of three sons, passed away at age 85. Jim was born on June 13, 1936 in Hartley, to Harold and Violet (Thortsen) Bryant. He received his BA in Education from the State Teachers College of Iowa (UNI) and his Master's in Education from Colorado State University.     • Nov. 7, 1946 The Hartley School was pleased at the large crowd that attended the all-school play. It was estimated that nearly 950 people were present, which set an all-time school record. In one of the most spectacular finishes ever witnessed here, Hartley came within one point of tying a favored and undefeated Paullina team in a conference game and Hartley’s homecoming. Despite losing four fumbles in the first half, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn still dominated North Butler in a 26-7 win Oct. 29 in the second round of the Class A football playoffs at Peterson Field.     It seems inevitable that Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and West Hancock would eventually meet in the Class A football playoffs. The two teams played in the third round of the 2020 postseason at Britt, where West Hancock won, 56-18. During the 2021 regular season, H-M-S and West Hancock were paired again for a non-district matchup in Week 6. The defending Class A champions won that game, 20-6.     Two Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball players have been recognized by the War Eagle Conference for their performances on the court and in the classroom. Senior Jasmine Lux, who led H-M-S in kills and blocks during the 2021 season, was named to the all-conference second team. Another senior, Kaley Pearson, was named honorable mention.     A Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball player has been recognized for her character and leadership in the sport. Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese announced that Kaley Pearson received the E. Wayne Cooley "You Can" Award. The award given by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association is named for the longtime executive secretary of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.     Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn closed out the 2021 volleyball season with a 3-0 loss to Boyden-Hull in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A regional tournament.
