    Iowa Republicans had a lot to celebrate Tuesday night. Not only did incumbent Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds breeze to re-election past Democratic challenger Deidre DeJear, GOP candidates Brenna Bird and Roby Smith knocked off Democratic Attorney General Tom Miller and Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald, respectively.     A decorated soldier with local ties will greet area residents during Hartley's Veterans Day program on Friday. Command Sergeant Major Jeremy Ten Kley, a Hartley native, will give the keynote address during the program, which is slated for 9 a.m. in the H-M-S Events Center. The public is invited to attend.     Blink twice and you might have missed it. Thanks to dry conditions, the corn harvest in northwest Iowa blitzed to completion earlier this fall. According to Growmark FS agronomist Alic Mohni, most farmers were out of the fields by Halloween. “I’ve never seen a harvest this fast,” he said. Mohni received varying yield reports during the corn harvest ranging between 140-250 bushels per acre.     Meals planned to honor veterans The Hartley American Legion Auxiliary will host a breakfast for local veterans and their spouses or other guests on Friday, Nov. 11 from 8-9:30 a.m., at the Legion building. This year's initiates are senior Cadence Klein and juniors Heather Elgersma, Alexis Grover, Delaney Murphy, Abigail Otto, Adam Schierholz, Kinsey Schirmer, Brennan Stoltz, George Vargas and Emma Vollink.     • Nov. 13, 1947 A good sized crowd attended the dismantling ceremony of the servicemen’s honor roll. Guests of honor were the next of kin of World War II dead.     Although they did not have a winning record in 2022, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team improved its victory total by six compared to the previous season. The Hawks compiled an 8-17 record this fall, which compares to a 2-17 mark last season.
