    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Nov 11, 2021

Residents in Iowa Senate District 1 will decide Zach Whiting's successor during a special election Dec. 14. Gov. Kim Reynolds set the date for the vote last week. Whiting, a Republican from Spirit Lake, resigned from his District 1 post Oct. 30 due to an impending move to Texas, where he has accepted a job with a conservative think tank. As of Tuesday morning, two Republicans – Dave Rowley and Barb Clayton, both of Spirit Lake – had announced campaigns to succeed Whiting. No Democrats have ste...

Today marks our annual celebration of the men and women who so selflessly served the country as members of the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is an important holiday, and one that every freedom-loving American should acknowledge. Sometimes it's easy to ignore occasions like this one. People are busy, work is hectic and there's just simply too much else going on. However, all of those excuses seem futile when you really stop and think about it. Our veterans gave us a commitment that's...

  • Feeling chili

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Nov 11, 2021

I have a friend who hates the weather every time the temperature falls below 70 degrees. It’s a small wonder he’s lived in Iowa his whole life. Summer is the only season he enjoys. He’s wrong, of course, because fall is the best time of the year. I can’t find a single fault with autumn’s charm. The trees are shedding their colorful foliage, front porches are decked out in pumpkins and other decor, and the weather is perfect. Like any sane individual, I enjoy stepping outside and not needing a shower after two minutes because of the humidity. My...

    • Nov. 14, 1946 An airplane from Eli, Minn. to Spencer became lost in a snowstorm and had to make a forced landing on the Fred Will farm near Hartley. Mr. Williams, the pilot and only occupant, was unhurt and the plane was not damaged. Work was for the most part completed on the Hartley skating rink at the north end of the municipal park. Retaining boards were put in place to hold the water in a specified area and flooding was to begin as soon as cold weather was here to stay. A strong Hartley football squad added another victory to its list wh...

  • One hurdle they could not clear

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Nov 11, 2021

Once again, West Hancock proved to be Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's nemesis. After eliminating H-M-S from last year's Class A football playoffs on their way to a state title and winning this year's regular season matchup in non-district play, West Hancock parlayed big plays on offense and a stifling defense into a 27-0 win in quarterfinal action on Nov. 5 at Britt. Unlike the non-district game on Oct. 1 when West Hancock had several double-digit play drives, H-M-S's defense did not allow any...
