Effective Tuesday, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District is now requiring that facemasks be worn whenever social distancing is not possible. School board members voted on Monday to remove language in the district's return to learn plan recommending optional use of face coverings and replace it with a requirement that they be worn. "I would entertain the idea of continuing that for grades K-12 when unable to social distance until the January board meeting, and then revisit it,"...
In a primetime address Monday, Gov. Kim Reynolds issued stricter public health measures in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 as infection rates soar and hospitalizations set records across the state. Masks now must be worn indoors when individuals are within 6 feet of one another for 15 minutes or longer. Additionally, no more than 15 people can be gathered indoors and no more than 30 can be gathered outdoors. These restrictions apply to wedding receptions, family gatherings, conventions...
A commercial space in downtown Hartley is stocked to the gills with apparel, but none of it's for sale. That's because it's all free. Hartley Community Outreach opened its doors last month in the former Med-Equip Pharmacy building located at 141 S Central Ave. Mari Howard, who owns the building with her husband, Rusty, spearheaded the idea for the charity along with Holly Myers, Mindy Jo Alesch and Louise Fennell. So far they've been offering clothes, toys and baby items to families in need....
Positive news about a COVID-19 vaccine has Community Memorial Health Center Administrator Dr. Janette Simon seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. "I just hope it's not a train," she said with a laugh. The fact that Simon has been able to keep her sense of humor throughout the pandemic is a small miracle in and of itself. According to public health officials, CMHC is the only long-term care facility in O'Brien County to have zero COVID-19 infections among its residents. That's a testament...

Iowa is facing its darkest days right now, and it's not because the clocks rolled back an hour this month. COVID-19 infections are through the roof, hospitalizations are at an all-time high and medical personnel are stretched thin. The situation has grown desperate in the Hawkeye State, and that fact was made clear Monday by the governor's new order. Gov. Kim Reynolds had pushed back against a strict mask mandate for eight months but was left with little choice but to ramp up restrictions. We...
To the editor: We as board members should not have had to make this very difficult decision. It could have been made by the governor, public health, or the mayor and his city council. They all decided to pass the buck to the school board. I would have to say I am quite disgusted with some members of this community for the language in emails and demeaning comments on social media towards the school board members. Being on the school board is a commitment that none of us take lightly, and to say...
Two years ago, an 18-month-old Catahoola Cur named Gabby became part of our family. We had been without a dog since the previous January, when our beloved chocolate Labrador Heidi left us. For the second time in our lives, Cheri and I agreed we would have no more dogs. The loss of Heidi did leave a huge hole in our hearts, and life was not the same for us. After our daughter got a new dog, our resolve to never have another one started to weaken. Finally, in August of that year we decided to...

• Nov. 22, 1945 Hartley residents were glad to learn that a garbage collector had been secured. The reason for the delay in getting a collector was the shortage of trucks. Collections would be made on Wednesday of each week during the winter. A second request was being made to all those residents who had not yet submitted their contribution to the Hartley Patriotic Chest. The drive raised funds to bring comfort and necessities to servicemen and America’s allies, and it did away with the individual drives that had been held in the past. A fai...

According to the latest crop progress report from the Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship, only 3 percent of the state's corn crop remains to be harvested, almost four weeks ahead of last year and just over two weeks ahead of the five-year average. Statewide, the moisture content of field corn remained at 15 percent. Farmers in northwest, north central and west central Io...
