  • Drive-thru testing site opens at Spencer

    Nov 26, 2020

As dropping northwest Iowa temperatures make drive-through COVID-19 testing more challenging, Spencer Hospital and Avera Medical Group Spencer have jointly developed a covered drive-through testing site available to patients whose care providers have placed an order for them to receive a COVID-19 test. "It's important to emphasize that this testing site is only for people who have an order placed by a local healthcare provider for that individual to be tested," explained Jordan Reed, Spencer...

It's safe to say Kelly Jo McDonnell is the only Royal native with four Emmy Awards under her belt. The 1988 Clay Central alumnus snagged a coveted gold statue for producing Minnesota Bound's "Boundary Waters At Risk" program. Minnesota Bound has aired on KARE-11 NBC in Minneapolis for 24 years and is a "magazine-style show," according to McDonnell, that focuses on stories of the great outdoors in and around the Land of 10,000 Lakes. "Boundary Waters At Risk" was a three-part breakdown of the...

  • Volunteers available

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Nov 26, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has affected Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn students in a variety of ways since it began. One impact on high school students is the fewer opportunities they have to complete their community service requirements. During the board meeting on Nov. 16, Principal Nathan Hemiller said that fewer opportunities are open to students trying to complete the required number of service hours. The board voted last spring to waive the requirement for the Class of 2020. Despite efforts by...

  • Welcome to Royal

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Nov 26, 2020

New residents to Royal will be receiving information about the community from someone who is a relative newcomer herself. Sara Ricke plans to pass out information packets to new residents of Royal as a way of welcoming them. The packets would include information about the city and local businesses. Ricke asked the city council earlier this month for cooperation in getting information about the city and addresses of new residents. Ricke and her husband, Matt, purchased the former St. Louis Catholic Church property two years ago and renovated...

  • S-N Editorial

    Sentinel-News Staff|Nov 26, 2020

It may not seem like there’s much to be grateful for this year. It’s probably pointless to note the pandemic has been the ultimate trump card on everything in 2020, but here we are. Still, there’s plenty to be thankful for if you look below the surface. Most notable are our health care workers, nursing home staff, teachers and others on the front lines in packing plants, grocery stores and delivery trucks who are keeping life as normal as possible through this mess. There are too many people and professions to list, and they get taken for g...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Nov 26, 2020

I’ve noted in past screeds on this page that Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. The food, drinks, people and football…what’s not to love? This year’s rendition of Turkey Day comes with one item off that list. My clan is not going anywhere or seeing anyone this weekend due to the plague, and we’re cooking everything ourselves. Not to brag, but I make a mean turkey – I use a recipe from one of my favorite YouTube cooking channels, Binging With Babish. Though I’m not losing sleep over potentially screwing up our food, I will miss showing...

  • Ernst: Recognizing the sacrifice of our military families

    Sen. Joni Ernst|Nov 26, 2020

Last year ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, I joined a congressional delegation trip to visit U.S. troops, including Iowans, deployed in the Middle East. As a former company commander in Kuwait and Iraq, I understand the significance of our elected leaders being on the ground in warzones and personally assessing our continued combat operations. It’s an important part of my job as a U.S. Senator and as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. This visit served as a reminder of the m...

"The teachers at CC/E always would strive to go that extra mile to show that they truly cared about you and your education." Munden has enjoyed being a CC/E team member since joining the staff and said being part of...

  • CC/E navigates thru pandemic with online book fair

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Nov 26, 2020

Nostalgia sets in when one brings up the words “book fair.” Certainly, nearly all students look forward to their schools’ Scholastic Book Fair each year. It is a coveted holiday of sorts in which parents sometimes splurge on a book, eraser, cool pencil or sometimes a poster in order to support the school. Book fairs also instill within students that reading anywhere, especially within the home, is key to their success. Things will look a little different for Clay Central/Everly’s annual Scholas...

    • Nov. 29, 1945 At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, relief for one of Hartley’s and the nation’s grave problems was suggested in the form of prefabricated homes which could be leased from the government. Students and staff completed this project of caring and sharing during American Education Week, Nov. 16-20. This honored tradition of giving was started more than 20 years ago by Judy Eckard, former Home State Bank...
