    Plans for a recreational trail in Hartley include a crossing at an existing pedestrian crosswalk near Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School. The Hartley Recreational Trail Committee has been awarded a $20,000 grant by the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Now in its fourth year, the H-M-S Giving Tree is once again providing holiday cheer to students in need this Christmas.     • Hartley man killed in traffic accident Richard Leth, 75, of Hartley, died as a result of a traffic accident which occurred on Highway 4/440th Street at 2:28 a.m. on Nov. 24. The Iowa State Patrol reported that Leth was northbound on Highway 4 when his 2007 GMC Sierra crossed the centerline and collided in the southbound lane with a 2019 Mack driven by Daniel Meyers, 65, of Spencer. Glenn was born Feb. 13, 1927 in Clarinda, the son of Albert Charles and Leila Iola (Shum) Wehrkamp. He was baptized on March 13, 1927 and confirmed in 1941, at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarinda. A new six-lane bowling alley at May City was preparing for its official opening. Bill Boernsen was the proprietor of the new establishment. The plane of Forest Newcomer, of Rock Rapids, was damaged Thanksgiving Day at the Hartley airport. No one was in the plane when a gust of wind tipped it up on the telephone wires. But visiting Sioux Central had all but settled the outcome by halftime to hand the Hawks a 67-43 loss on Nov. 22. H-M-S trailed 7-0 to start the contest and could get no closer than 10-4.
