  • Giving time is here!

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Dec 3, 2020

Patrons of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District are being called on to spread a little Christmas cheer. The H-M-S Giving Tree project has returned for a second year and is in need of donors. Those who'd like to contribute can do so by snagging an ornament off a tree at designated locations in Hartley, Melvin or Sanborn, then purchasing gifts and returning them for those in need. The project is once again being led by H-M-S High School counselor Kim Spier and Jenna Hemiller, wife...

  • Light it up

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Dec 3, 2020

Whether it's with a homemade sign or a loud holler, local children will have to get creative to share their wish lists with Santa Claus this year. Lap visits with the jolly ol' elf have been canceled in Hartley due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Good boys and girls need not fret, however, as Santa and Mrs. Claus will be traversing the City With a Heart Saturday during the Hartley Chamber of Commerce's first-ever light parade. "Since kids can't visit him, this was kind of a last-minute way to bring...

Legal counsel noted townships and municipalities in Clay County can opt out of participation by passing their own ordinances. There is no penalty for those who violate the regulation. • S-N Editorial

    Sentinel-News Staff|Dec 3, 2020

It seems like people in need living in small, rural communities are often forgotten – resources are thin and adequate help can be hard to come by. That situation has been exacerbated during the last nine months thanks to this pandemic, which jeopardized economic stability in many households. Communities are only as good as the people that comprise them. In the Hartley area, we've got a good group. You don't have to look too hard to find the giving spirit around these parts. There's Hartley C...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, S-N Editorial|Dec 3, 2020

Look, I’ve got nothing against the Christmas season. The spirit, cheer and generosity are all more than enough to warm my Grinch-like heart. Then there are the lights. For lack of a better phrase, I love seeing a house lit up like a Christmas tree. It always makes me pause and admire the work of minor electrical engineering it took to get them up there, and I can respect an individual so ripe with the holiday spirit that they put in hours of labor to display their cheer. That type of individual is not I, but I did brave Sunday’s blustery and...

  • Over Morning Coffee

    Bonnie Ewoldt, S-N Contributor|Dec 3, 2020

In the aftermath of a yearlong tornado, Americans were dropped into the Land of Oz. Life as we know it no longer exists. Our new surroundings are strange, and things are not as they seem. Everything is merely an illusion. We’ve been following a yellow brick road of information and advice to help us navigate a maze of COVID-19 terrors, personal disappointments and political chaos. As we struggled through unfamiliar territory, three wizards worked behind a curtain of secrecy to change our p...

  • Letters: A different sort of customer service

    Dec 3, 2020

To the editor: The hallmark of customer service is saying “yes.” “Yes, we can do that for you.” “Yes that can be done.” But what happens when the answer has to be “NO”? I was trained as a counselor during the “How-does-that-make-you-feel?” era. The approach to counseling was to discover what the patient wanted and work together to achieve it. Now, with COVID-19 and my de facto position as “protector,” the answer is always “no.” “No, you can’t do that.” “No, you can’t do this.” Saying “no” goes against all of my training and, frankly, my...

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Dec 3, 2020

"Throughout the years I have taught here, CC/E has consistently had some of the highest academic scores within our surrounding area schools. We have several excellent veteran teachers with many years of expertise. Our students are not just...

    Mike Petersen, S-N Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 3, 2020

    • Dec. 6, 1945 The same road grading outfit that leveled the school athletic field also leveled the grounds for the Hartley park. Although it was too late in the year for any further work to be done on the park, it was feasible and hoped that at least a skating rink would be laid out. Les Getting, of Sanborn, purchased the Charlie Mayer property and was opening his stockyards there. The office was located one-half block south and one-half block east of the Fairmont Creamery Co. Mr. Getting was a dealer in hogs and sheep. An attorney g...
