  • Dusty demo in Royal

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Dec 10, 2020

Royal's skyline is going through some big changes. Demolition of Ag Partners' main grain elevator complex started Friday at the company's location in the north part of town. The structure suffered a massive explosion in August caused by "a grain dust incident," according to Ag Partners, and has been sitting empty awaiting demolition ever since. The site is expected to be cleared by the end of the month. A single excavator with a multi-processor equipped with demolition jaws methodically has...

  • A Christmastime cruise

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Dec 10, 2020

The holiday season hit the heart of Hartley last Saturday during the Chamber of Commerce's first-ever light parade. Decorated fire trucks, an ambulance, cars and a few other vehicles snaked their way through town during the event. Santa and Mrs. Claus even made an appearance, waving to adoring onlookers from the back of the fire department's vintage truck. The parade was held due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the cancellation of traditional events like lap visits with Santa and the holi...

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Dec 10, 2020

The CDC has announced new quarantine guidelines for individuals who've come into contact with someone infected with COVID-19. The guidance of a 14-day quarantine period is still considered the safest way to prevent the virus' spread; however, two additional time periods have been suggested. Now, an individual can end their quarantine 10 days after contact if no symptoms have occurred during daily monitoring. Additionally, if you get a negative test on day 7 and if no symptoms occur during daily...

  • Live nativity scene hosted in Everly

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Dec 10, 2020

December usually boasts a myriad of opportunities for youth to gather and celebrate the Christmas season as one, but just like everything else, the pandemic has put a damper on many traditional holiday plans. The wonderful thing about congregations and communities built in lasting friendships is the creativity birthed in their comradery and togetherness. Hope proved that all is not lost and the Christmas story can still be beautifully told, even given these unfortunate times and pandemic...

  • The show must go on

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Dec 10, 2020

As if 2020 hadn't thrown enough wrenches into routines and traditions, it had to try its hand at ruining the annual Clay Central/Everly Elementary Christmas program. Luckily, CC/E didn't allow that to happen. The district held its first – and hopefully last – online K-6 holiday musical concert entitled "How to Train Your Reindeer to Fly." The CC/E preschool class opened the show with their version of the song "Tony Chestnut (Toe-Knee Chestnut)," "This musical tells the story of a group of rei...

  • Meet a Maverick: Diane Ulrich

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Dec 10, 2020

Diane Ulrich has quite the responsibility at both CC/E and Sioux Central schools. "I keep everything technology related up and running for the staff and students," she explained. "At CC/E I am responsible for everything from the network to the student and teacher devices." To say her job is vital for both districts would be an understatement, especially given the current pandemic climate requiring virtual learning to be ready and present as an option. CC/E is a 1:1 district with students PK-2...

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Dec 10, 2020

Last week the Clay Central/Everly third grade classroom hosted Clay County Farm Bureau representative Jennifer McCarten as a guest speaker on the wide world of agriculture. The class partook in a web-creating activity in which students used pictures and string to show how daily objects or household items such as towels, clothing, food or even shoes all come from resources derived from the farm. This subject hits close to home since CC/E is nestled in a vast farming community where farmers'...

  • The Writer's Pen

    Roger Brockshus|Dec 10, 2020

The use of fences around cemeteries has changed over the years. I’m not sure what the trend is for cemeteries these days, but if you look around, you will see a lot of different kinds of fences. All cemeteries seem to have trees and flowers, but not all are fenced. My wife, Rita, and I both come from large families. Rita was the youngest of five children, and there were six children in my family. My dad had six kids in his family, and my mom had seven. Rita’s dad came from a family of seven kid...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Dec 10, 2020

I've never been particularly fond of cats. I had dogs growing up, we have a dog right now, and I greatly prefer their company to the feline variety. Therefore, you can appreciate my recent confusion about the nine-week-old kitten in our house. Kaity brought her home last Wednesday and she's apparently won over the household, including Bo, our German Shepherd. I'm in the minority and the majority is ruling on this one. It should be noted that I did technically agree to the cat, which I've named P...

  • 1995: Bond petition being circulated at H-M-S

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 10, 2020

    • Dec. 13, 1945 Because so many complaints had been registered that numerous foxes were attacking chickens and pheasants, the American Legion decided to sponsor a series of hunts to eliminate as many of the foxes as possible. Embankments were placed around Hartley’s new ice skating rink in the town park and flooding had begun. Art Lage graciously volunteered to take charge of the work until such time that funds were available to make the rink a permanent town project. The American Legion planned to open the east room of the Legion Hall on the...

  • Second half lifts Jays past H-M-S

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 10, 2020

A highly-competitive boys' basketball game between Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Gehlen Catholic turned into a much different contest during the second half. The Jays led by two points at half time, but revved up their offense in the second half to earn a convincing 76-45 win on Dec. 1 in Hartley. The Hawks overcame an early deficit to tie the score at 15-15 at the end of the first quarter. They led early in the second period before Gehlen Catholic pulled out to a 29-22 advantage. H-M-S used a...

  • Shooting makes all the difference

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 10, 2020

Improvement in some areas was evident as Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn played its second girls' basketball game of the young season. Compared to the opener, the Hawks cut their turnovers in half and shot well (88.3 percent) at the free throw line against visiting Gehlen Catholic. H-M-S also had plenty of looks at the basket, taking 60 shots from the floor. But they made just 25 percent of those attempts while Gehlen Catholic made 44 percent of their 66 field goal tries. That disparity resulted in...
