The location of a proposed carbon dioxide pipeline near Hartley is making some folks in eastern O'Brien County anxious. Concerns were raised about the line's route Dec. 1 during an informational meeting in Sheldon. Navigator CO2 Ventures' Heartland Greenway pipeline would run along the south edge of city limits en route to connect with Valero's ethanol plant west of town. The pipeline, which will be carrying hazardous liquid CO2 compressed at pressures ranging between 1,300-2,100 psi, will...
The Hartley City Council on Monday moved forward with plans to add to an existing infrastructure upgrade on the east side of town. Members unanimously approved a design services agreement with Bolton & Menk for cure-in-place-pipe (CIPP) lining related to the lift station replacement project. The lining work was added to the construction itinerary after bids for the lift station came in much lower than anticipated last month. "CIPP is a relatively simple way to repair lining," engineer Wes Boyer...
A contested special election in Iowa Senate District 1 on Tuesday ended up nowhere close to competitive. Republican Dave Rowley defeated Democrat Mark Lemke with 75.6 percent of the vote. Both men hail from Spirit Lake and were vying to succeed former District 1 senator Zach Whiting, who resigned in October due to an impending move to Texas. "I am grateful for the opportunity to represent the people of northwest Iowa. The work begins now," Rowley said in a news release. "As the legislative...
As a follow-up to last month's discussion regarding ordinances regulating weight limits and truck parking, the Royal City Council on Dec. 8 agreed to language changes that address those issues. The council in November tabled approval of the first reading of Royal's revised code of ordinances after hearing public input regarding regulations that would limit load weights and truck parking in the restricted residential area. One suggestion was to have the city issue permits that would allow semi tr...

Property owners in northwest Iowa have been subjected to a tsunami of information this fall about a "new" kind of pipeline that would cut through many miles of farmland in the region. While these carbon dioxide pipelines have been around for a while, they're certainly new to us here and pose many questions. Two have been proposed so far. Both Summit Carbon Solutions' project and Navigator CO2 Ventures' pipeline would cut through O'Brien and Clay counties, with Navigator's intersecting with...
My workday begins every morning when most people are settled in for a good night’s sleep. I usually wake up before my alarm goes off at 2 a.m. My morning begins with a shave and shower, then quickly changing into my YMCA work clothes. I then get my dog, Gabby, ready to go for her walk. She has a red-lighted collar she wears on our walk, while I wear a safety vest so that we both can be seen. After grabbing a bottle of water and its container, we are ready to go. Gabby’s leash has a 30 foot ext...

In the Bible, God makes it clear as to what He requests of us: To help others, to give and not take, to be filled with and show grace, and to love. Some do this on a personal level by caring for their children, making time for devotion and prayer, or spending time with loved ones. Others do so locally by helping in soup kitchens, donating to church projects or helping clothe children in the winter. Then there are those that hear a calling to go abroad, helping disciple to those who have yet to...
• Dec. 19, 1946 While hunting in South Dakota, Ed Knaack shot a pheasant which was strictly out of the ordinary. On close examination it appeared to be a cross between a white leghorn chicken and a ring neck pheasant. W.J. Linder tendered his resignation from the Hartley town council effective Dec. 31. He had been elected an O’Brien County supervisor. John P. Voss was appointed to fill Linder’s unexpired term. In line with communities throughout this part of the country, the local gas company was forced during the severe cold weather to cut o...

This time of year, it is easy to be consumed with the wrapping paper, bows, Santa lists and sugary treats. Sometimes we become so distracted by the hustle and bustle of the season that we forget about why we celebrate Christmas. Last Sunday, the Bethlehem Lutheran Church King's Kamp performed its Christmas musical. Cheerleaders for Jesus stormed the stage complete with a mascot to engage the congregation. The Holy family also joined on their journey to Bethlehem as the children cheered and sang...
