  • Welcome back!

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Dec 23, 2021

Hartley is once again a one-Stoplight town. After months of hard work and anticipation, the Stoplight Lounge opened its doors to patrons on Monday night. Though they admitted to being a little nervous, owners Ryan "Stitch" Brehmer and Ashley Reid were ecstatic to show off the completely renovated building. "It's been a stressful process to get here and it's been hard on us, but hopefully it'll be a good thing for the town," Brehmer said. "We saved the building, which was my biggest concern....

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Dec 23, 2021

Zak Schnack knows how to earn $1,500 the hard way. The Hartley man just wrapped up a fundraising campaign fed by food challenges broadcast on his YouTube channel, Iowa Retro Gamer Dad. He admits it was pretty gross at times, but it was all for a good cause. The money generated by his gastronomical feats helped buy toys for local families in need this Christmas. "It was really fun to do," said Schnack. "Not only was it showing off my YouTube channel a bit, but it was cool to see that most of the...

  • Pedley's Ponderings

    Nick Pedley, News Editor|Dec 23, 2021

Kaity asked me what I wanted for Christmas a couple weeks ago. I told her new underwear, and I wasn’t joking. It’s funny how things change over time. I can’t remember the last time I ever really wanted anything for Christmas other than less debt. I don’t think Santa will be cutting me a fat check on Dec. 25, but that’s adulthood for you. Christmas is for the kids nowadays. Kaity was wringing her hands earlier this month over what to get Oliver and Cece. They already have enough junk, so we wanted to make it count. We’ll see how that pans o...

  • The Writer's Pen

    Cheryl Stanley|Dec 23, 2021

Anticipation simmered like apple cider on the back burner. The weeks before Christmas were filled with activities at school, church, home and the great outdoors. Our snow fort was frozen so hard that it would be spring before its walls would melt. Our stash of snowballs had frozen together, but a swift kick could separate those lethal weapons should the neighbor boys show their heads. The skating rink with its dirt banks had been flooded by the local fire department, but that gesture was the last adult involvement. Only a plank bench offered an...

The journey for them was two-fold: Physical and emotional. The physical journey consisted of travelling from Nazareth to Bethlehem, roughly 80 miles. Eighty miles may not seem like a great distance to us, but that is 80 miles travelled by foot or beast of burden. At the time of this journey Mary could be nine months pregnant with J...
