People were able to visit loved ones in nursing homes once again, and mask usage and social distancing were mostly halted. The...

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn school board will be one member short soon. Board President Scott Heetland submitted his letter of resignation effective Jan. 1. • Toft's Thoughts

    Iesha Toft, S-N Contributor|Dec 30, 2021

The "Where are you Christmas" song was playing in my head as I sat in my living room, looking at the debris from Christmas. New gifts sat freshly played with and game cards were left unshuffled by their box. Wrapping paper brimmed from garbage bags by the window. Gene Autry's Christmas album filled the room with Christmas classics from the record player in the dining room. The tree was still lit, but no gifts laid underneath. And then my eyes slowly moved to what was placed perfectly in front...

  • Shorthanded but still battling

    Mike Petersen, Sports Editor & Staff Writer|Dec 30, 2021

Facing the No. 1-ranked girls' basketball team in Class 3A with a full roster would have been a daunting task for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. But to do so with a depleted team was even more challenging. Hawk coach Lester Tessum thought he might only have one starter available for the Dec. 21 game with Unity Christian in Hartley. They were held to seven points in each quarter while Unity Christian's offense was doubly productive, giving them a 27-14 half time lead. "I thought they...
