Each year, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn fifth graders complete a flag unit in language arts class. They learn about flag etiquette, the history of the United States flag, and the different branches of the U.S. military. The students, along with their teacher, Angie Mayer, even go through each part of the U.S. Flag Code. At the end of the unit, the students are left with a better understanding of what the flag represents and how to show it respect. They then write an essay of 300 words or less...

Disaster Recovery Fund activated in Clay County Following the severe weather events on May 21, the Clay County Community Foundation (CCCF) has activated the Disaster Recovery Fund (DRF) on behalf of Clay County. The weather couldn't have been better on Monday for the kickoff of Clay Central/Everly's reinstated K-6 Maverick Relays. The event was hosted at the former CC/E football field and track in Royal. The day was divided in two, with K-2 grade events hosted in the morning and 3-6 grade events in the afternoon. CC/E fifth graders enjoyed the wonderful weather last Wednesday by heading out to Everly and Royal residents for a day of service learning.
