    No new COVID-19 deaths in O'Brien, Clay counties The total number of deaths associated with COVID-19 in O'Brien and Clay counties remained unchanged over the past week. Clay County has three recorded coronavirus-related fatalities while O'Brien County has eight. Overall, O'Brien County has had 263 total confirmed coronavirus cases since March and 150 recoveries, while Clay County has had 255 cases and 218 recoveries.     A Spencer woman recently became one of the all-time greats for Clay County 4-H. Janel Maurer was this year's inductee from Clay County in the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. She serves on the Clay County Poultry Committee and was a club leader for the Lincoln Lions in the past. Maurer was nominated by Clay County 4-H Committee Member Bri Pullen.     • Sept. 20, 1945 The men’s league at the Hartley Bowling Alleys began their season. Twenty-four men’s teams were bowling on Monday, Tuesday and Friday each week. The women’s league was preparing for their season. A new rotating schedule was set up by the schools of the Sioux Valley Conference to take effect with the 1946 football season.     The Hartley Community Daycare Center recently landed a large donation from the Valero Energy Foundation. The charitable organization contributed $12,500 for future improvements to the daycare center's playground. Due to ill health, Roy (Bud) Pheteplace retired as manager of the Huntting elevator after many years of efficient service.     HMS Parents IN Education (PIE) donated $5,000 to the elementary school to enhance the surfacing of the playgrounds at the new facility in Hartley.
