The Iowa State Pedal Pull Association held its 33rd annual state pedal pull championship on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the North Iowa Event Center in Mason City. There were girls and boys 4-12 years old that placed first, second or third in over 180 sanctioned pedal pulls across Iowa. • Sept. 23, 1948 Bette Dee, four-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orland Krutzfeldt, had the exciting pleasure of riding on the blimp Wonder Ship at Sheldon. Her great-grandfather, J.W. Patton, 90, was also one of the group. He was the oldest man to have ridden on the ship. Chicken thieves were again busy in the area. The Sioux County sheriff reported that 400 chickens were stolen from a farm southeast of Sheldon. Drought worsens in eastern Iowa August saw another below normal rainfall month in Iowa, with preliminary data showing that the state received 3.25 inches of rain, 0.88 inches below normal. This marks the sixth month in a row of less than normal rainfall. According to the Iowa Drought Plan, Drought Region 3 (northeast Iowa) is now in a "drought warning," with conditions in some limited areas approaching "drought emergency." Everly resident Denise Cook, along with her family members Ryan Nemmers and Brandon Hansen, dropped off a special surprise at the Abben Cancer Center this week. The trio on Aug. 12 hosted the 3rd Annual Cookie Memorial Mini-Golf Tournament during Everly Community Days. The tournament is held in memory of Denise's late husband, Kevin Cook, who passed away in late 2020 after a hard battle with cancer. Junior Jacob Cates earned honorable mention on the 2023 Class 1A Northwest All-District Team. Senior Tyson Tessum was named to the IHSBCA Academic All-State second team.
