• Aug. 12, 1948 The executive committee of the American Legion voted to donate the use of the main floor of the Legion Hall to the Hartley Recreation Association. The space was used weekly as a youth center. Approximately 15 area farmers were participating in the Iowa Master Soybean Contest. Measuring of the plots had started. • Aug. 5, 1948 At an impressive ceremony before a large crowd, the official cornerstone laying of the new St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Central Avenue was held. Construction had begun on May 5, and walls were approximately eight feet high at the time of the ceremony. Clarence Busche, local superintendent for Peoples Natural Gas, was awarded a pin and certificate for 10 years of service with the company. Over 80 employees from the Midwest were honored. Century Mutual Insurance Association on July 19 held its Annual Firemen's Golf Benefit Tournament. This year's event was held at the Primghar Golf & Country Club in Primghar. Century Mutual sponsors the event with all entry fees from the teams being distributed to the fire department of their choice. The tournament featured 94 golfers comprising 24 teams teeing off. Dan Hunt, of Granville, was honored last week for his decades of service to the O'Brien County Fair. Fair Board President Darwin Gaudian presented Hunt with a plaque commemorating 45 years of service during the talent show July 24. The O’Brien County Value Added Ag (VAA) Steering Committee presented the 2023 Ag Hall of Fame awards on July 24 at the O’Brien County Fair. • July 29, 1948 Plans for the 1948 O’Brien County Fair and Future Farmers Livestock Show were virtually complete. The festivities were to last two days instead of three, but organizers promised they would be two days filled with attractions for the many visitors to Hartley. Local baseball teams lost close games on the diamond. The junior Legion team lost to Primghar, 5-4, and to Melvin, 1-0. The 2023 Junior Golf Academy was held at the Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club last month. Twenty-three kids attended, with a make up of 14 boys and nine girls. After three days of learning and practicing chipping, putting and hitting out on the course, a three-hole tournament was held. Hartley producer wins largest ribeye in ICA contest In mid-June, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) held its annual Carcass Challenge banquet in Ames. Local cattle producer Allan Johnson, of Hartley, bred the steer with the largest ribeye area of 17.3 sqare inches. The steer was sponsored by Sterling Cattle Company.
