    AgState reports good results in first year AgState held its annual meeting in-person on Tuesday, Dec. 6 and reported positive numbers. AgState CEO Troy Upah and Board President Chuck Specketer, along with CFO Bob Dobson, presented the annual report. The company showed sales of $1.5 billion and a net savings of $21.5 million. $7.5 million of the 2022 profits were allocated to 4,500 members.     • Dec. 18, 1947 A record holiday crowd gathered in Hartley Saturday afternoon to witness the Christmas parade presented by the various schools in the area, and to meet Santa. Saint Nick arrived promptly in his plane and was escorted through the business district in the fire engine. George Albright, of Hartley, was appointed to the O’Brien County Board of Review.     • Dec. 11, 1947 The grand opening of the Nissen Drug Store, formerly Potter’s, featured a special get-acquainted offer of a “2 for the price of 1” sale at the soda fountain. Cyril Nissen, formerly of Estherville, was the new proprietor. After much discussion, the American Legion decided to buy 14 acres along Highway 18, just west of the Terpstra property.   • Fiesta Foods donates to H-M-S Giving Tree

    The H-M-S Giving Tree recently landed a sizeable contribution from Fiesta Foods. The local grocery store held a casual Friday fundraiser, where employees could pay a donation to wear jeans or other less formal attire. Store owner Casey Connor also pitched in some cash to up the donation even more.     • Dec. 4, 1947 Clifford Ostrom, of Rock Island, Ill., a former South American sales manager for John Deere, purchased the Hartley Feed Mill from Vern Donnenwerth. A new six-lane bowling alley at May City was preparing for its official opening. Bill Boernsen was the proprietor of the new establishment. The plane of Forest Newcomer, of Rock Rapids, was damaged Thanksgiving Day at the Hartley airport. No one was in the plane when a gust of wind tipped it up on the telephone wires.
