July was a busy month at the Everly Public Library. As of July 1, Christie Seivert took over as the director. She is not a stranger to the library, as many patrons have seen her during programs. She brings with her a love of reading and a wealth of knowledge about books. The summer reading program ran for three weeks in July. • Aug. 7, 1947 All was in readiness for the 4-H Fair and Harvest Exposition to be held in Hartley. The livestock show at the Kruse sheep barn was expected to be the largest in the history of the fair. Girls’ exhibits and demonstrations were planned in the school auditorium. • Aug. 7, 1947 J.W. Patton celebrated his 89th birthday anniversary by taking his first airplane ride which was planned by Lyle Shinkle, C.R. Pettijohn, Art Linder and Will Bumann, owners of the plane, and by Lambert Fechter, the pilot. The ride consisted of a sightseeing trip which lasted 45 minutes over Hartley and extended as far as Lake Okoboji. Borden receives Valero Scholarship Wyatt Borden, of Sanborn, was recently awarded the Valero Scholarship. He is the son of Scott and Ruth Borden. Scott is a water treatment process operator at the Valero Renewables – Hartley. On Friday, July 22 a luncheon was held in Wyatt’s honor. Wyatt graduated this spring from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School with Highest Honors. Century Mutual Insurance Association on July 13 held its annual Firemen's Golf Benefit Tournament. This year's event was held at the Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club in Hartley. Century Mutual sponsors the event with all entry fees from the teams being distributed to the fire department of their choice. • July 10, 1947 A caravan consisting of four young people and counselors met with the Hartley Methodist Church Youth Fellowship group to help revitalize and strengthen the youth program, and give a clear vision of the Christian responsibility on every phase of life. A truck loaded with milk for the Hartley Creamery ran off the grade north of the bridge across the Ocheyedan River during a thunderstorm. Blood donors combine to sustain over 380 lives A total of 31 units of blood were collected during the drive held in Hartley on June 22. The blood collected will help to save and sustain the lives of 81 people in need. Four donors who achieved milestone donations are Keith Stoltz and Larry Espey, one gallon; Douglas Nagel, five gallons; and Randall Kramer, nine gallons.
