    Klein sisters place at state pedal pull The Iowa State Pedal Pull Association held its 34rd annual state pedal pull championship on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Activity Center in Burt. There were girls and boys 4-12 years old that placed first, second or third in over 180 sanctioned pedal pulls across Iowa.     • Sept. 22, 1949 The town council announced the purchase of a 10-acre tract located just south of the railroad tracks, on the west side of Central Avenue. The total purchase price was $5,000. The primary purpose of the purchase was to develop it into a home for the O’Brien County Fair. A number of motorists who left their cars parked in Hartley were victims of pranksters who loosened the valve cores and let the air out of two or more of the tires.     • Sept. 15, 1949 Rivin Bros., formerly of Scotland, S.D., purchased the Kaplan Markets, including the Kaplan Store in Hartley. Riven Bros. also owned seven stores in South Dakota. The new store name was Rivin Bros. Food Market, but few other changes were anticipated. The kindergarten class that numbered 42 students was separated into morning and afternoon sections. The overall enrollment was 490.     A shortened 2024 Junior Golf Academy was held at the Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club June 11-12 with 26 young golfers attending. After just two days of learning, the event was rained out and subsequent flooding at the course made it impossible to complete the academy safely.     • Sept. 1, 1949 The Moneta Consolidated School was deep in the process of erecting a new and modern building for additional facilities, necessitated by the growing program of the school. The $45,000 gymnasium annex housed a full-size basketball court, two classrooms and an auditorium stage.
