    Despite cold temps and stiff breeze, the hunt was on in Hartley last Saturday. Children ages 0-10 hit the grounds of Community Memorial Health Center for an egg hunt sponsored by the I.E.F. Club. Participants were split into age groups before heading out en masse during the hunt. Approximately 100 children joined in on the fun. Prizes were awarded to those who found special eggs, while everyone received a bag of goodies and a can of pop for their efforts. The biggest treat of all was a visit...

    • April 24, 1947 A contract for a new engine for the Hartley municipal light plant was awarded to R.V. Leary Co., of Des Moines. The Superior engine was a 1,000 horsepower unit with a 1,000 kilowatt generator. Total price for installation of the unit, including building alterations and accessories, was $114,512. The engine was designed so that if the need arose it could be supercharged to 1,440 horsepower, thus using the full capacity of the generator.     The Hartley Rec Trail Committee recently landed a big donation to help jumpstart fundraising efforts. Duane Kolpin and Connie Olhausen presented a check for $1,359 on behalf of the Hartley Community Foundation. Other recent donations have come from the Lions Club ($500) abnd Y'Adnom Club ($100). The trail committee is in the early stages of fundraising and planning the recreation trail, which would span approximately four miles around Hartley when finished.     Staff and students at H-M-S Elementary had fun during Dress Like a Gym Teacher Day on March 30. Participants dressed like a gym teacher in order to help create awareness for heart health.     • April 3, 1947 The town council decided to reject all bids submitted for construction of a sewage disposal plant for Hartley. An advertisement for the letting of bids was ordered republished. It was hoped that any new bids would be such that the council would contract for construction of the necessary project. Ed Meehlhause brought an egg of unusual proportion to the Sentinel office.
