    • April 11, 1946 The O’Brien County Co-op Wool Growers’ Association pooled their first load of wool for the 1946 season. Approximately 5,000 pounds of wool were shipped to the Iowa Sheep and Wool Growers’ Cooperative in Des Moines. O’Brien County was one of the leading counties in the number of pounds of wool marketed through the cooperative. County agent Kenneth Kramer announced that the O’Brien County 4-H fair would again be held in Hartley. Dates selected for the 1946 event were Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 19 and 20.     • April 11, 1946 The town council voted to allow $15 a month to Mayor P.A. Leese, to rent his office for use as police headquarters. A police phone was being installed. Harry Lage was hired as night watchman to replace Bob Meyer. A strong wind which blew in gale-like proportions caused considerable damage to a hanger being constructed at the airport at May City.     The Everly Public Library hosted an Easter egg hunt last Saturday. Participants also painted ceramic eggs courtesy of Deb Shanley, owner of D & L Ceramics. There were fewer tears than past years when kids gazed upon the life-sized rabbit's giant wave and big-eyed smile.     The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Middle School jazz band attended the Morningside Middle School Jazz Festival on Friday, March 19. The festival was a clinic format only this year, with no ratings or placings. This format was to ensure separation and safety of the schools and students attending. H-M-S performed "The Black Cat," "Stand By Me" and "El Gato Gordo" with several students having solos.     • April 4, 1946 Three large scrapers were employed by the Town of Hartley to prepare the runways for the airport located southeast of town. Leveling was done for two runways, one a half mile running north and south and the other a little over a half mile running northwest-to-southeast.     H-M-S senior named to academic all-state team Bennett Haack, a senior at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School, is one of 25 students from across Iowa who were named to the 2021 Iowa Basketball Coaches Association boys' academic all-state team.     Betty Taylor's desk donated to Hartley Public Library The Hartley Public Library recently landed a new piece of furniture in honor of a well-known patron. Orville Taylor, of Hartley, donated the desk of his late wife, Betty, who founded the Hartley Writing Group. Upon Betty's death in May of 2020, members of the group wanted to commemorate her memory by creating a writer's corner at the library.
