    Recognized for academic excellence at UNI Two area students were named to the fall 2020 semester Dean's List at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Those included on the list must have earned a grade point of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while taking at least 12 hours of graded work.     The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn jazz choir began competitions last month. Due to the pandemic, Iowa Lakes Community College hosted performances, along with a clinic experience with Dr. Kurt Runestad, in its brand new auditorium. According to H-M-S vocal director Kristi Wingert, the jazz choir had a great experience and is working to fine tune their pieces for the Late Winter Concert.     Named to Dean’s List at N’Western College Erik Vander Laan and Abby Vander Laan, students at Northwestern College in Orange City, have earned a spot on the Academic Dean’s List for the fall 2020 semester. The Dean’s List is comprised of students who have achieved a semester grade point average of 3.50 or above while carrying a minimum of 12 graded hours.     • Jan. 31, 1946 The Hartley Farmers Mutual fire truck joined the Ocheyedan firemen in fighting flames that completely destroyed the Luinstra garage at May City. The flames originated in the rear of the workroom. Thanks to quick response of the community, nearby buildings were saved.
