For David Honse, three simple words sum up everything Memorial Day stands for. Courage, honor and sacrifice. "I find it unique that three words that are so deeply ingrained into our thoughts about the defense of this country have such small definitions, but such huge visuals on how we look at our servicemen and women," he told the crowd gathered at Pleasant View Cemetery on Monday. Honse, a Desert Storm veteran who served a decade of military service, noted the tremendous sacrifice each service...

  • Judge: Iowa's pipeline land survey law is unconstitutional

    Jared Strong, Iowa Capital Dispatch|May 11, 2023

State law that allows hazardous liquid pipeline companies access to private land for surveys is unconstitutional because it doesn't provide compensation for intangible damages suffered by landowners, a district court judge has ruled. "The damages resulting from a landowner's loss of his right to exclusive use of his property are subjective in the same way that pain and suffering damages are as it relates to a victim of a tortious injury," wrote Judge John Sandy, in his Wednesday ruling. Because...

O'Brien County Conservation naturalist Lindsey Craig explained Hartley's visitor isn't exactly unique. "Turkeys seem to have a mind of their own and have been spotted in other...
