The changing aesthetic on rolling hills throughout northwest Iowa can only mean one thing – harvest season is just around the corner. Soybean fields have been changing rapidly from green to gold over the past week. Alic Mohni, an agronomist with Growmark FS in Hartley, said local farmers are expecting varied yields thanks to extremely spotty rain totals throughout the region during the growing season. "We're going to get a little bit of everything," he said. "North of Hartley, things look p...

The annual event drew 277,389 visitors last year, and fair manager Jeremy Parsons is hoping 2022's edition hits an even higher mark. "Our goal each year is to put on the best fair possible, and if the weather cooperates, we might have a chance to break an attendance record," he said. "But our focus is never on the attendance. It's...

After playing two close sets with Sibley-Ocheyedan, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team could not sustain that effort in the final two sets. The Hawks lost the match played Aug. 29 at Sibley by scores of 24-26, 27-25, 18-25 and 16-25. The teams traded leads for much of the first set and a series of ties was only broken when S-O scored the final two points. H-M-S was able to return the favor in the next set. "We saw some definite improvement from last week," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese....
The fastest way through Hartley has not been a straight line over the past week. Crews have been busy resurfacing a stretch of Highway 18 that runs from the east edge of town to the west edge. Work started on Aug. 24 with surface milling and is expected to wrap up by the end of the week when the new asphalt is completely poured. The update is a state effort and not the city’s responsibility. Once it’s finished, the stretch of highway through Hartley will be reduced from four lanes to three. The...

A plan to remedy issues at Hartley's never-opened new pool received tentative approval from a state board. According to City Administrator Erica Haack, the Iowa Electrical Examining Board on Aug. 18 approved a plan that would address electrical inspection failures at the pool. She noted the approval came with several stipulations, and nothing has been set in stone. "We don't have all the information yet for the engineer to make an informed decision and present it to the council. At least this we...
There's a new pitmaster serving up smoky treats to Hartley residents and passersby on Highway 18. Uncle B's owner Brent Riemersma, of Brewster, Minn., pulled his barbeque trailer into the former D-Lux Drive Inn location earlier this summer and has remained there since. He uses the building for dine-in seating and as prep area for his food, which has been a hit among locals and visitors alike. "Everything I make is homemade from scratch," Riemersma said. "One day I had to use store-bought potato...
Sixteen years of providing medical care to residents of O'Brien County and the surrounding area are coming to an end for Dr. Soe Nyunt. Nyunt came to Hartley Mercy Medical Clinic in 2006. It proved to be a good fit, as he is board certified in family practice. "This has been the primary clinic for 16 years, serving the rural communities and seeing all kinds of patients," Nyunt said. In addition to practicing at the clinic, he also provided care for residents of Community Memorial Health Center....
The Royal City Council wants to improve the roads that provide access to a major grain storage facility in Clay County. But accomplishing that requires money, and accessing one potential funding source has been challenging. In a discussion this month with Chairperson Barry Anderson of the Clay County Board of Supervisors, Mayor Josh Toft said the city needs farm-to-market funds to improve roads leading to AgState's facility in the northeast section of town. "We've asked for funds to help with...

Initial indications are that H-M-S will have more students to welcome. Final enrollment will not be determined for some time, but the district is anticipating over 30 newcomers. That trend seems to apply at the high school, where at least 11 new students are enrolled. "We continue to get more students, which is a great thing," Principal Nate Hemiller said...
"It's not apples to apples. It's confusing." That was Royal Mayor Josh Toft's comment during the August city council meeting as he passed out bid sheets for painting and repairing the water tower. As anticipated, three companies did submit bids. However, they were not consistent in terms of the work they proposed to do to the tower. One proposal called for inspecting and painting the tower and 30,000-gallon tank, which is what the council wants to have done. Another bid covered replacing the lad...
