Republican voters in Iowa House District 5 can't complain about a lack of options on the ballot next week. Dennis Bush, Zach Dieken and Tom Kuiper are all vying for their party's nod in the newly-formed House District 5, which includes all of Osceola and O'Brien counties and parts of Cherokee and Buena Vista counties. No Democrats filed to run on the opposite side of the ballot. Bush, of Cherokee, currently represents Iowa House District 3, having been elected in 2020. He is a farmer and has...

Space at Hartley’s new swimming pool has gotten a little cramped lately. With the end in sight, more construction workers were brought in this week to push things closer to the finish line. Hartley Superintendent of Public Works Jaron Benz said crews have been working on bringing everything up to grade, pouring sidewalks, installing fixtures like sunshades and slides, painting the final coat on the pool basin, and erecting the exterior fence. “It’s a little bit of everything right now,” he said. The big question mark is still the pool’s...

At one time, the only way anyone could see a high school athletic event was to attend in person, and coaches had to trade films in order to scout opponents. Things have changed since then, and more changes are on the horizon. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn is considering an opportunity to provide greater video access to viewers and coaches. Athletic Director Mark Petersen told the school board on May 16 that HUDL and Fuller Digital are offering upgrades that include additional cameras and greater...

Everly is about to become a one-siren town. The city council on Monday approved an amended quote from Blue Valley Public Safety raising the price tag to replace the town’s warning siren from $28,500 to $31,098.95. Included in the new quote are the removal of the city’s two old sirens and the addition of a noon and 6 p.m. whistle, which was requested by council members. The new warning siren will be installed later this summer. Only one of the city’s old sirens functions properly, and the new one will be capable of covering the entire town...
Response to letters asking Royal residents to clean up their properties was encouraging, but city council members want to make sure that further progress is made. According to discussion on May 9, over 50 initial courtesy letters were sent to property owners prior to Royal’s cleanup day, which was April 25. As a result of a subsequent survey of properties, 24 follow-up letters were sent. “A lot of people got something done,” noted Council Member Mitch Fahnlander. The second letter set a deadline of June 6 for listed concerns to be addre...

The air was thick with smoke between Harris and May City last week thanks to a fire that burned for nearly two full days. Fire departments from May City and Harris were paged to Sunrise Farms' poultry facility on White Avenue around 11 p.m. on May 9. A large stockpile of cornstalk bales had caught fire, and it would wind up taking 44 hours before the final flames flickered out. May City Fire Chief Nick Shaffer called it a "once-a-decade type of fire." Approximately 3,000 bales were lost during...
The saying, "Make hay while the sun shines," certainly applies to corn and soybeans. Area farmers hit fields full speed over the past week thanks to beneficial weather conditions that finally allowed seeds to get into the ground. Planting season has been hampered this spring due to wet and cold weather that put off fieldwork for most of April, but busy fields have been the status quo this week as farmers rushed to get dirt moving and crops planted. "It is amazing how many acres we can cover once...
Fourth graders at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary spread some love recently with a donation to Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UMDO). Fourth grade teacher Kim Dokter said the project came at the perfect time, as the class was in the middle of completing the "Civic Virtues and Democratic...
Hartley officials are keeping their fingers crossed that the new pool's ribbon cutting isn't postponed too long thanks to an unexpected delay. Superintendent of Public Works Jaron Benz on Monday updated the council about progress at the new pool, informing the group that delivery of the variable frequency drives (VFDs) which control the two pool pumps has been pushed back. He said the delay isn't unique to Hartley, but it is a problem. Without the VFDs, the pool cannot be filled and equipment ca...
