The saying, "Make hay while the sun shines," certainly applies to corn and soybeans. Area farmers hit fields full speed over the past week thanks to beneficial weather conditions that finally allowed seeds to get into the ground. Planting season has been hampered this spring due to wet and cold weather that put off fieldwork for most of April, but busy fields have been the status quo this week as farmers rushed to get dirt moving and crops planted. "It is amazing how many acres we can cover once...
Fourth graders at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary spread some love recently with a donation to Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UMDO). The students put together birthday kits containing goodies like candy, cake, frosting, cake pans, banners, plates, party hats, glow sticks and other items as part of a Project Jack grant obtained by the school. Fourth grade teacher Kim Dokter said the project came at the perfect time, as the class was in the middle of completing the "Civic Virtues and Democratic...
Hartley officials are keeping their fingers crossed that the new pool's ribbon cutting isn't postponed too long thanks to an unexpected delay. Superintendent of Public Works Jaron Benz on Monday updated the council about progress at the new pool, informing the group that delivery of the variable frequency drives (VFDs) which control the two pool pumps has been pushed back. He said the delay isn't unique to Hartley, but it is a problem. Without the VFDs, the pool cannot be filled and equipment ca...

The pool's deck is slated to be poured this week pending c...

He comes from Pine Island, Minn., where he led a longterm care facility for 16 years. He also served in the top role at a facility in Trimont, Minn., prior to his previous job. A tiny green beetle is poised to cost the City of Everly a lot of green. Waste Water and Street Superintendent Nate Fitzgerald on April 18 shared his concerns about the emerald ash borer (EAB) with the city council. He recently tallied 115 ash trees on city-owned property and in the right-of-way, a vast majority of which will need to be removed once the invasive pest makes its way to Everly. "It will cause total devastation of our ash trees," Fitzgerald explained. "I just want the city to be...
A recent study conducted on the price of power in Hartley suggested a rate increase for customers serviced by the local utility. The city council earlier this month reviewed a report compiled by Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) that analyzed Hartley's current electricity rates. MRES Rate Analyst Supervisor Karen Olofson suggested the city hike prices by an average of 2.5 percent due to increased power supply costs from the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), which supplies Hartley...
The dirty work is underway on a large infrastructure project aimed at improving the sewer system for residents in east Hartley. Crews from GM Contracting, Inc., of Lake Crystal, Minn., arrived last week and began directional drilling for a new force main under Eighth Avenue East. The work is the first step in a project that will replace the sewer lift station that services homes in the surrounding area. "Everything has been going pretty well and to schedule so far," said Hartley Superintendent...

Kunzman plans to build a 50'x100' shed on the plot. Kunzman, who owns Hawkeye Construction, said work at the site will commence shortly. "It will be a nights and weekend project," he said. "We're hoping to have it up by the winter." Kunzman plans to...
The Everly City Council is hoping that going from two emergency sirens to one will be a good thing. Members on Monday unanimously approved the purchase of a new siren from Blue Valley Public Safety for $25,554.45. With the addition of a battery backup, the total bill will be just under $28,500. The siren will pump out 130 decibels of noise at 100 feet and is capable of covering the whole town. Only one of the city’s two emergency sirens works, and both will be replaced by the new setup. Blue Valley representative Bruce Fisher was on hand to e...

According to Superintendent Patrick Carlin, the career and technical education advisory committee met April 7 with parents, business owners and...
A Royal resident owning a property with different classifications asked the city council on April 13 to designate one of the parcels with a new street address. William Werts explained that his entire property has been designated as 309 4th Avenue, with a shop building on one side for his business and a residence on the other. The shop is classified as commercial while the house is designated as residential. The classifications determine property taxes and do not indicate the parcels’ zoning status. Werts said the differing classifications c...
Denizens of northwest Iowa were advised to keep their mouths closed and eyes shut tight April 14 due to high-speed winds that ripped through the region. Dirt and dust in the air made the sky hazy throughout the day as steady wind gusts of 50 mph or greater blew through. According to the National Weather Service's Sioux Falls bureau, the Spencer airport reported wind speeds topping out at 60 mph. Things gradually died down over the next two days, but Sunday presented its own surprise – a snowy E...
It's out with the old and in with new at the Hartley Public Library. Old carpet is being replaced with new vinyl flooring throughout the building. According to library Board Member Dave Vander Broek, the carpet was installed when the library expanded to the east in the 1990s. "That's a long time," he said. "We've got our use out of it." The library will be closed through Saturday, April 30 to accomodate the improvements. No meeting space is available during the closure and no overdue fines will...
Rich Boardman has a succinct way of describing his new job. "I have my own man cave that I get to invite people over to every night, and that's pretty cool," he said. The Hartley man took over operations of the bar at American Legion Post #288 on April 1. The local watering hole had run dry – the lease of Boardman's predecessor, Mari Howard, expired on Feb. 28, leaving loyal patrons shut out for the entire month of March. But thanks to some good timing and a little coaxing, Boardman decided h...
Josh Paskert knows he's in the right place. Thanks to a passion for meat and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, the rural Everly man recently took a leap of faith by purchasing Nelson Locker in Hartley from Bryan and Jodene Nelson. The longtime business owners were ready to retire, and Paskert saw the opportunity of a lifetime. "It's something I always really enjoyed and wanted to get back into doing," he said. "I'm really excited. I think maybe I'm already taking on more than I should, but I'm...
The Hartley City Council made clear on Monday that if more lifeguard applications weren't received soon, the brand new pool would have a hard time opening the doors this summer. The council signed off on increasing the starting lifeguard wage from $8.50 per hour to $10 in an effort to bolster interest. According to discussion, the new rate aligns more closely with other aquatic centers throughout the area. "You've gotta be halfway competitive because you can go to the gas station and get $15...
