Physicality was still Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's primary objective during the 2022 Homecoming football game. But H-M-S also successfully passed the ball to complement a potent rushing attack. That combination led to a 47-point halftime lead and an eventual 66-34 victory Sept. 16 at Peterson Field. Kooper Ebel nearly broke free to score on the first play from scrimmage, but needed just one more snap to reach the end zone. His 27-yard run just 28 seconds into the game gave H-M-S a 6-0 lead. Travis K...
Homecoming week at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn got off to a rousing start with the volleyball team's 3-0 sweep of visiting South O'Brien on Sept. 12. The Hawks earned their second straight War Eagle Conference win by scores of 25-10, 25-19 and 25-21. "Getting the sweep against South O'Brien was a great way to start Homecoming week," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "I definitely felt like some of the momentum from the West Sioux win carried over." The Hawks dominated at the net, recording nearly twice...

The ebb and flow of the first three sets of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's volleyball match on Sept. 8 indicated a positive trend line for West Sioux. But prospects soon brightened in a big way for the home team, who dominated the final two sets to claim a 3-2 win. H-M-S earned its first War Eagle Conference win by scores of 24-26, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14 and 15-2. The momentum shifted as often in each of the first three sets as the final outcomes. "I felt like our girls were trying to do the right...
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runners' times and team finishes at the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invitational on Sept. 6 showed vast improvement since the last time they competed on the course at Sibley. Both varsity teams recorded better scores than they did in 2021, and several individuals' times were faster than they previously ran. "Our kids are off to a strong start to the season," said Hawk coach Kirsten Taylor. "Our boys' total team points were almost cut in half in comparison to last...
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn stayed true to its identity while South O'Brien showed some new wrinkles when the two teams clashed Sept. 9 at Peterson Field in Hartley. The Wolverines had some success throwing the football but it was not enough to offset the Hawks' physical style of play. The result was a 22-6 win that keeps H-M-S atop the Class A District 1 standings. "I thought we played very physical. Our physicality is what we asked our kids to do," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers. "Just proud of our...
Big plays. Long drives. A goal line stand. Leads that appeared to be safe. Comebacks that fell short. All of that illustrates the kind of game Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Gehlen Catholic played Sept. 2 at LeMars. The Hawks' physical style of football prevailed, but not without a fight. They led by as many as 23 points but needed a late score to hold off Gehlen Catholic for the 50-35 win. "I felt like this was our kids' night," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers. "I was just so proud that they came out...
A new cross country season began at a new venue, as the Emerald Hills Golf Course was the site for the Okoboji Invitational on Sept. 1. In the past the meet was held at the Woodlyn Hills course east of Milford. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's boys competed as a varsity team and finished ninth out of 11 schools with at least five runners. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn opened the 2022 volleyball season at the usual place and came away with a familiar result on Aug. 23. The place was the West Lyon tournament and the result was a 1-2 record in three matches. H-M-S came close to getting its first win against Akron-Westfield. The Hawks earned a 21-16 win in the first set and the Westerners returned the favor in the second. Akron-Westfield then won the tiebreaker (15-10) to claim the match. Four kills each by Abby Douma and Elise Haack, and...
Friday night's football season opener between highly-rated West Sioux and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at Hawarden was a stark contrast in offensive approaches. West Sioux (Class 1A No. 2) scored six touchdowns and none of those drives lasted more than 2-1/2 minutes. The Hawks (Class A No. 3), on the other hand, had two scoring drives with a combined 38 plays that took over 21 minutes of game time. Hawk coach Jay Eilers felt the 38-18 loss came down to a few key moments. "High school football comes...
At least one media outlet believes the season-opener Friday night at Hawarden will feature two of the Iowa's best high school football teams. Radio Iowa's preseason poll has West Sioux ranked No. 2 in Class 1A and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at No. 3 in Class A. Several area teams are also ranked in the Top 10 by Radio Iowa. Spencer is at No. 8 in Class 4A; Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley is No. 7 in Class 3A; West Lyon is Class 2A's top-ranked team and neighboring Central Lyon/George-Little Rock is...
It wasn't anything like an official game, but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Spirit Lake's football teams put on the pads and helmets for a scrimmage Friday night at Hafer Field in Spirit Lake. The varsity offenses each ran 12 plays against the varsity defenses, followed by 12 plays by the JV offenses against the JV defenses. They repeated that sequence before each varsity offense had three chances to make a first down in a short yardage situation. Game 1 for both teams is Friday night. H-M-S...
The football teams from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Spirit Lake will give fans a taste of the upcoming season during a scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 19. The scrimmage will be held at Hafer Field in Spirit Lake, starting at 6 p.m. "It will not look like a varsity football game," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers. "It will be varsity versus varsity and JV versus JV. We plan to run 24 to 27 plays on offense and defense for the varsity." Spirit Lake is asking for donations of Gatorade as admission to the...

The Junior Golf Academy at Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club near Hartley had 26 junior golfers this year. The academy was held each Wednesday in June with the fourth week being a three-hole tournament. There were many helpful volunteers who helped the kids with chipping, putting and driving range as well as make cookies for the snacks at the end of each day. The Junior Golfers loved getting out on the course and learning about golf, and the instructors enjoyed teaching them. Instructors noticed...
The three Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn softball players named to the 2022 All-War Eagle Conference teams have something in common: they are all first-time selections. Freshman Gracie Knobloch was named first team all-WEC. She finished second among conference players in batting average (.548) with at least 50 at-bats, and was among team leaders in hitting, fielding and pitching. Senior Bailey VerHelst was named to the all-WEC second team and junior Cadence Klein was honorable mention. A team's place...
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball player Jacob Cates was named to the All-War Eagle Conference first team for the 2022 season. The sophomore, who was honorable mention all-conference in 2021, led H-M-S in batting average, hits, double, triples and home runs (tied), and also had the highest fielding percentage (.941) among regulars in the lineup. Two other Hawks were named to the all-conference teams for the first time. Senior Jordan Ortega was named second-team all-conference and junior Trenton...
For some softball programs, a 10-15 season record would be a step backward. For Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn it could be a sign of better things to come. With a roster primarily comprised of freshmen and sophomores, H-M-S doubled its victory total from a year ago and had its first double-digit win season since 2017. This year's improvement could lead to greater results in the future. "Overall we had a great season. Going from five wins last year to 10 with a young team is impressive," said Hawk coach...
The 2022 baseball season started on an up note for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and a 3-2 record in the final five regular season games was a plus. But the Hawks also suffered through a 10-game losing streak and endured an inning that seemed would never end during district play. The combined result was a record of 5-15 overall and 2-8 in the War Eagle Conference. "Looking back, it was definitely a season of ups and downs," said Hawk coach Jeremy Gloden. "We didn't quite reach the marks we had set for...
A seven-run second inning gave Sibley-Ocheyedan all the scoring it needed to hand Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn an 11-2 loss in a Class 2A regional softball quarterfinal game July 6 at Ocheyedan. S-O had answered H-M-S's run in the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Generals started things in the second inning with three straight hits, followed by an error, a walk and two hit batters that led to five runs. A pair of infield groundouts built S-O's advantage to 9-1. The Hawks' initial run came when...
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team may have felt as though they were in a time warp during the opening round of the Class 1A district baseball tournament. In an eerily similar inning to one they had a year ago in district play, the Hawks could not prevent their opponent from putting up a double-digit run total. That set the stage for Bishop Garrigan's 15-3 win July 2 at Algona. The Hawks had the makings of a significant rally of their own in the second inning, when they loaded the bases...
South O'Brien's first-inning lead was no stumbling block for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's baseball team, which came back to claim a 5-3 win on June 27 in Hartley. Two hits and an error allowed the Wolverines to go ahead 2-0, but H-M-S answered with a pair of runs on singles by Tanner Tesch and Nick Bronstad. Jordan Ortega's two-run double in the second inning and two Wolverine errors helped the Hawks take a 5-2 lead. "I was very happy with the way we responded after a rough top of the first," Hawk...
Wins on three consecutive nights helped Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's softball team improve its final regular season record to 10-14, doubling their win total from a year ago. The week could have started differently if H-M-S hadn't answered a challenge by visiting South O'Brien on June 27. The Hawks surrendered a three-run lead in the seventh inning but came up with a big hit in their last at-bat to emerge with the 5-4 win. "It was a great game by both teams," Hawk coach Stephanie Bronstad said. "We...
