An inability to score in one quarter spoiled the season-opener for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team. Sioux Central's 17-4 advantage in the second quarter helped them earn the 50-34 win on Nov. 23 at Sioux Rapids. H-M-S led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter but the second-quarter scoring drought caused them to fall behind by 12 at half time. Sioux Central outscored the Hawks by four over the final 16 minutes to earn their first win. Lydia Harders and Jasmine Lux scored 11...

The 2021 football season at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn will rank with some of the best in the history of the program. Records of 8-3 overall and 6-0 in Class A District 1, including two playoff wins, offer some measure the Hawks' accomplishments this fall. But Hawk coach Jay Eilers feels there was more to a successful season than just results on the field. "Greatness is not about record, it is about people," he said. "We accomplished greatness this year." There were some oddities about the season....
Once again, West Hancock proved to be Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's nemesis. After eliminating H-M-S from last year's Class A football playoffs on their way to a state title and winning this year's regular season matchup in non-district play, West Hancock parlayed big plays on offense and a stifling defense into a 27-0 win in quarterfinal action on Nov. 5 at Britt. Unlike the non-district game on Oct. 1 when West Hancock had several double-digit play drives, H-M-S's defense did not allow any...
Statistics may not lie, but they do sometimes tend to blur the whole truth. Despite losing four fumbles in the first half, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn still dominated North Butler in a 26-7 win Oct. 29 in the second round of the Class A football playoffs at Peterson Field. The Hawks lost the turnover battle (4-2) but still outgained North Butler by a significant margin in total yardage (388-152) and scored twice in the second half to seal the victory. Hawk coach Jay Eilers told the players after the...

During the 2021 regular season, H-M-S and West Hancock were paired again for a non-district matchup in Week 6. The defending Class A champions won that game, 20-6. Now they meet again this Friday, again at Britt, and again with a berth in the playoff semifinals on the line....

Sioux Central was one win away from advancing to the next round of the 2A regional volleyball tournament, but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn had other ideas. Coming back from a 2-1 deficit, the Hawks defeated the Rebels, 3-2, on Oct. 18 at Sioux Rapids. A surge midway through the first set gave H-M-S the lead, but Sioux Central's late rally made the 25-23 final score seem closer than it was. "We came out strong," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "We were passing the ball well and executing well...
Boyden-Hull flexed its offensive muscles early and forced Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn to play from behind during a Class 2A regional quarterfinal match on Oct. 20. The Comets (2A No. 4) led in every set of their 25-4, 25-19, 25-11 win at Hull to end H-M-S’s season. The Hawks fell behind by 10 points to start the match and struggled to get into their offense. “Boyden-Hull did what great teams do in the first set and took advantage of our mistakes,” said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. H-M-S also trailed in the final two sets but was more compe...

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runner placed fifth at the War Eagle Conference meet on Oct. 11. It was the fourth time she placed in the Top 15 of the varsity runners in that meet. Otto acknowledges it feels "really good" to be all-conference again. "The last 400 I kicked it in," she said. "I thought I was seventh but when I finished I was fifth." According to Hawk coach Kyle Borchers,...

The Westerners received the opening kickoff and put together a 13-play drive that lasted over 6-1/2 minutes. Quarterback Cade Walkingstick scored on a 1-yard run. "They came out in that first series and did a great job,"...
The 2021 regular season ended just as it started for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team. The Hawks lost to Akron-Westfield in the opening match of the West Lyon tournament back in late August and they were swept by the same team (25-11, 25-11, 25-8) to close out the regular season on Oct. 14 in Hartley. The Hawks steadily lost ground in each set as they were unable to generate enough points on offense or counteract the net strength of the Westerners, who recorded 34 kills. H-M-S had a...

The aftereffects of a tough loss to the No. 1 team in Class A the previous game coupled with a week of Homecoming activities affected Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn early in its football game against Hinton. But the Hawks responded with 49 unanswered points to secure a 61-13 win Oct. 8 at Peterson Field. The victory, coupled with South O'Brien's loss to Akron-Westfield, secured the District 1 title. It is the first outright championship for H-M-S since back-to-back crowns in 1996 and 1997. Hawk coach...
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn knew what was coming when West Hancock had the football, but that didn't make it easy to stop them. Class A's No. 1-ranked team rushed for 354 yards on 66 attempts while preventing H-M-S [No. 10] from having any offensive consistency during a 20-6 win last Friday at Britt. Hawk coach Jay Eilers was most disappointed that his players' hard work and effort didn't pay off with a victory. "We came here to win and we didn't quite get it," he said afterward. The Hawks did not...

Getting an early jump on Unity Christian in two sets gave Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn reason to get excited, but that momentum proved to be short-lived. The Hawks led 4-1 in the first set and 3-1 in the third, but could not sustain either advantage. Unity Christian pulled away in both sets as H-M-S could not string points together. The Knights, who finished the match with...
