• Stolen truck found at pit
The Clay County Sheriff’s office reported that sometime during the evening of May 23 or morning of May 24, a 2018 Ford F350 truck was stolen from a residence on Highway 18 west of Ruthven. The truck is owned by Iowa Lakes Electric.
The vehicle was tracked to a county pit near Graettinger. It was discovered that an attempt was made to dispose of the truck in the water, but it was unsuccessful as the truck became stuck in loose gravel. The truck was returned to the owner.
The case remains under investigation. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol and the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office.
• Arrested on assault, drug charges
A Spencer man was arrested on several charges following an incident at a motel.
According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the 1800 mile of 350th Street on May 23 to serve a no contact order to Ismael Leon Rodriguez. He was not allowed at the residence due to the order and was given a ride to Days Inn.
While at Days Inn, Rodriguez allegedly assaulted the clerk and a sheriff’s deputy. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Clay County jail, where marijuana and paraphernalia were found in his belongings.
Charges filed included Assault, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Rodriguez was held to appear before the magistrate.
• Alleged reckless driver charged with OWI
A Spencer man was arrested on May 16 at 11:30 p.m., following an incident which occurred in Dickinson County.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a report from Dickinson County regarding an alleged reckless driver in a Chrysler passenger vehicle which nearly sideswiped another vehicle.
During a traffic stop in the 1700 mile of 280th Street, Garret Wassom, 21, was placed under arrest and charged with OWI-1st Offense.
• Loses control on gravel road
A pickup ended up in a creek as a result of an accident on May 23 at 11:15 p.m.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Hayden Michael Case, 17, of Paullina, was operating a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 northbound on Pierce Avenue where he was distracted by an ongoing relationship issue and allegedly driving in a careless manner. Hayden was driving an estimated 70 mph when he entered the intersection of 450th Street and Pierce Avenue, which is located at the crest of a hill.
Hayden lost control of the pickup and drove off the west side of the gravel road. He overcorrected, the pickup slid down the gravel road sideways for an extended distance and then entered the east ditch and rolled twice before coming to rest in a creek.
Hayden was able to exit the pickup and seek assistance. He reported complaint of pain/injury but was not transported for treatment. Damage to the Ram was listed at $15,000. Hayden was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and Failure to Maintain or Use Safety Belts-Adult.
• One person injured in ATV accident
One person was seriously injured in an ATV accident that occurred on May 26 at 3:33 p.m.
According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, a 2012 Polaris Razor 570 operated by Tasha Jean Kinnetz, 36, of Sanborn, went out of control on a gravel driveway/yard when her sandal became stuck in the accelerator pedal. The ATV went sideways, hit a slight elevation and rolled once.
Kinnetz received suspected serious/incapacitating injuries. She was transported by Sanborn Ambulance to Sanford Hospital-Sheldon. A passenger, Carter Clancy, 8, of Melvin, had suspected minor/non-incapacitating injuries. He was transported to the hospital by private vehicle. Damage to the ATV was listed at $200.
• Collide in construction zone
A vehicle rear-ended another while in a road construction zone on May 28 at 10:15 a.m.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Ashley Lynn Proehl, 29, of Archer, was westbound in a work zone area in the 4900 mile of Highway 18/320th Street when she briefly turned around to speak to her child. When Proehl looked back at the roadway, she saw a 2014 Ford Focus driven by Teanna Lisa Montoya, 28, of Orange City, stopped at a stop sign. Proehl slammed on her brakes and attempted to turn, but her 2014 Jeep Patriot Latitude struck the Montoya vehicle in the rear. The report stated that Proehl admitted fault and stated she should have been paying better attention.
No injuries were reported. Damage to the Focus was listed at $1,500 and damage to the Patriot was estimated at $2,000. Proehl was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to a Reasonable and Proper Rate.
