ISU announces spring 2020 dean’s list

More than 12,500 Iowa State University students were recently named to the spring semester 2020 dean’s list. Students must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale while carrying a minimum of 9 credit hours of graded course work to get named to the list.

Students listed below are from this area.

Everly: Joseph Alan Langner, 2, Horticulture; Benjamin Allen McClain, 4, Animal Science.

Hartley: Seth David Morphew, 2, History; Jennifer Anne Vander Lee, 4, Animal Science.

Royal: Rachel Ann Findling, 3, Agricultural and Life Sciences Education; Ryan James Van Westen, 4, Biology.

End-of-year recognitions at H-M-S schools

Two of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s building principals reported end-of-year recognitions for several students.

Students at H-M-S Elementary who recorded perfect attendance during 2019-20 were: Transitional Kindergarten – Adalynn Fritz; Kindergarten – Olive Mohni; Grade 3: Treyton Schierholt; Grade 4: Patrick Den Hartog, Ellie Pals and Lexi Schmillen.

Recognized for excellent attendance (missed one-half day) were: Grade 1: Hoyt Ahrenstorff; Grade 3: Natalia Diaz; Grade 4: Carolina Van Beek and Hayden Dolphin.

Principal Cathy Jochims said the recognitions were for students’ attendance prior to the school closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Middle school students of the month were announced by Principal Mark Dorhout. Those recognized for April were: Grade 5: Brody Meendering; Grade 6: Kayle Walker; Grade 7: Gracie Knobloch; and Grade 8: Kaci Richter.

Students recognized during May were: Grade 5: Grant Kunzman; Grade 6: Clara Funk; Grade 7: Ben Waddell; and Grade 8: Cody Glackin.

Spring graduates at UNI

The University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls awarded degrees to 1,420 spring graduates. Local graduates are listed below.

Hartley: Alan Beving, Bachelor of Music, Music Education: Instrumental/Gen.

Royal: Jess Manning, Bachelor of Arts, History.

Named to UNI dean’s list

The University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls has announced the spring 2020 semester dean’s list. The following students are included on the dean’s list for earning a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while taking at least 12 hours of graded course work.

Hartley: Taylor Grohe, Hunter Orthmann.

Sanborn: Emily Rouse.

Food storage capacity grant

The DNR is offering a new grant opportunity to help address food waste, an issue that negatively impacts environmental, economic and social sustainability in Iowa and across the country.

The competitive grant opportunity helps efforts to expand storage and cold storage of donated food. Food banks, food pantries and other non-profit organizations receiving donated food for distribution to food insecure Iowans are eligible to apply.

Information and application materials can be downloaded under the “food waste” tab at http://www.iowadnr.gov/FABA.

Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until available funds have been awarded.

CMHC meeting canceled

Community Memorial Health Center’s annual board meeting has been canceled. The event was originally postponed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

HPL writing prompt for Week 2

The writing prompt for Week 2 of the summer library program at the Hartley Public Library is “A story that changed my life.”

Submit 1-2 pages to the library by Thursday, July 2 with your name and a phone number or email address, and whether you give permission for others to see your work with or without your name on Facebook, the library’s website, or displayed in the library.
