1945: O’Brien County to organize soil conservation district

• July 5, 1945

A plan to organize a soil conservation district in O’Brien County was drawn up by the soils committee of the program planning board. The committee felt there was sufficient need to have a district organized to take care of a soils conservation program.

S/Sgt. C.J. Muilenburg was cited for leadership in battle, having gone through five major battles and keeping the same squad of men he went into combat with. His wife and daughter, Mrs. LaRue Muilenburg and Jerilyn Joy, were living with her parents near Melvin.

The town council voted to employ Leon Schoel, of Spencer, to make a preliminary survey of Hartley’s surface water drainage. He was also authorized to make a survey and investigation, and prepare a plan and profile of the existing sanitary sewer system.

• July 2, 1970

Mr. and Mrs. John Van Olst were planning a nostalgic journey to their native Holland and Germany. Accompanying them on the six-week trip were Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Hildreth.

Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club in cooperation with the town of Hartley was sponsoring a gigantic fireworks display for the entertainment of area residents on July 4. Through the cooperation of the community, ice cream bars were to be served to all youngsters attending the display.

Amateur radio operators of O’Brien County participated in the annual field day by setting up their shortwave receivers and transmitters in the Primghar city park and communicating with other amateur stations throughout the country. Among the participants were Lee Beckley, Hewitt Grotewohl and Norman Kelley, of Hartley.

• July 6, 1995

Residents of the Senior Wellness Center gathered for a mock wedding party. They shared stories about their own weddings, heard wedding-related stories and opened gifts both old and new that would be given to newlyweds.

The Hartley park board ordered two picnic tables and budgeted for two more, and purchased 5-row aluminum bleachers and planned to add more in order to have seating available at both parks. Renovations of the ballpark bathrooms were also being finalized.

Marlys Pelz, of the Iowa Department of Economic Development, discussed future business trends during the annual meeting of the Hartley Economic Development Corporation. Members also voted to change the annual meeting date from June to April in order to alleviate conflicts with summer activities.
