• Fatality in bridge construction zone
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident that took the life of an Underwood man on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The communication center received a report at 11:10 p.m., that a vehicle had driven through the “Road Closed” signs eastbound on Highway 18 into the bridge construction and started on fire. The bridge construction is located approximately 1-1/2 mile west of Hartley.
At the scene officers found a 2003 Buick Century registered to Robert Elwood Crotsley, 67, of Underwood. Crotsley had driven through the sign and fencing used to block the 6400 mile of Highway 18. The car struck a flatbed trailer registered to Christensen Bros. Inc., of Cherokee, and both vehicles continued 108 feet after impact and came to rest in the middle of Highway 18.
Crotsley was pronounced dead at the scene by the O’Brien County Medical Examiner.
Damage to the Crotsley vehicle was listed at $2,000. Damage to the flatbed trailer and to metal brackets owned by Christensen Bros. totaled $10,000.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Hartley Police Department, Hartley Fire Department, Hartley Ambulance and the Sutherland Police Department.
• Two face charges after accident
Charges were filed following an accident at the intersection of 240th Avenue and 390th Street, at 11:40 p.m. on Aug. 9.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that Levi Hurlburt, 20, of Spencer, was eastbound on 390th Street when he attempted to turn north onto 240th Avenue. Hurlburt failed to negotiate the turn, causing the 2019 Ford Escape to enter the ditch on the opposite side of the intersection and roll onto its side.
The investigation determined that Hurlburt was under the influence other than alcohol. According to the report, Hurlburt tried to run away, was caught by the deputy and allegedly resisted arrest. Hurlburt was tased and then handcuffed.
The report stated that a passenger, Seth Lane, 18, of Spencer, interrupted the deputy several times during the investigation. Lane was placed under arrest.
No injuries were reported. The Escape, owned by Kimberly Hurlburt, sustained disabling damage.
Hurlburt was charged with OWI 1st Offense, Possession Controlled Substance-Marijuana, Possession Controlled Substance-Xanax, Possession Drug Paraphernalia, Interference with Official Acts Causing Injury, Possession Alcohol Under Legal Age and traffic offenses.
Lane was charged with Possession Controlled Substance-Marijuana, Possession Controlled Substance-Xanax, Possession Drug Paraphernalia, Public Intoxication and Possession Alcohol Under Legal Age. Both were placed in the Clay County Jail.
• Loses control of vehicle
A vehicle landed in the ditch and rolled over during an accident on a gravel road on Aug. 10 at 6:30 a.m.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 report that Charity Lynn Muller, 19, of Hartley, had been in an accident near Tyler Avenue and 330th Street. Muller stated to the deputy that she apparently hit a soft spot in the road and lost control while going 40 mph. The deputy observed approximately 100 yards of skid marks where it appeared Muller overcorrected twice and lost control. The vehicle appeared to turn 180 degrees and entered the north ditch backwards, rolled twice and landed on the passenger side.
Muller complained of pain/injury, but was not transported. Damage to the 2003 Buick Century was estimated at $2,500. Muller was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.
• Semi axles slide into ditch
A semi-trailer slid into a ditch at an intersection on Aug. 7 at 2:50 p.m.
According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, a 2014 Freightliner Coronado tractor/semi-trailer driven by Tanner Douglas Nelson, 31, of Dickens, was turning right onto 430th Street from Starling Avenue when the trailer axles slid into the ditch. The right rear well of the tractor and the landing legs of the trailer were damaged. Three large gouge marks were made in the road surface.
No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated at $200.
• Vehicle totaled after striking culvert
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigated a traffic accident that occurred on Aug. 10 at 2:26 p.m.
The report stated that Trever Kuhlman, 35, of Everly, was westbound on 360th Street and 200th Avenue when his 2002 Pontiac Montana entered the south ditch, struck a culvert, ran over a stop sign and came to rest in the southwest corner of the intersection.
Kuhlman was transported to the Spencer Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The report stated that the Montana was totaled. The Spencer fire and police departments, Fostoria Fire Department, Spencer Ambulance and Bud’s Service assisted at the scene.
