Virtual suicide prevention program remains available to agribusiness community

Iowa’s rural communities and families are still coping with the uncertainty, stress and imposed isolation produced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Financial worries and unpredictable commodity prices also continue to contribute to anxiety in the agriculture industry.

In response to this ongoing impact, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering weekly online “Question. Persuade. Refer.” (QPR) programs. QPR is a suicide prevention program that teaches participants three steps to help save a life from suicide.

“Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help,” said David Brown, Extension behavioral health specialist in a news release.

Extension is offering QPR every Tuesday from noon-1 p.m., through Oct. 27. Each program will last for one hour.

Agribusiness professionals, agriculture lenders and bankers, veterinarians, vet techs, commodity group members, producers, social service professionals and other concerned individuals can register at no cost for any of these programs.

To register, go to https://www.extension.iastate.edu/humansciences/QPR. Participants will receive a unique URL prior to the program to access the Zoom-hosted program.

For more information, contact Brown at [email protected].

To help caregivers find the support that they need, ISU Extension and Outreach is offering Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a program for caregivers of children with special health and behavioral needs or for those who provide care for a spouse, parent or friend with a chronic condition such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. The program provides information, support strategies, communication techniques, stress reduction ideas and resources to assist family caregivers with their concerns related to caregiving.

An Online Powerful Tools for Caregivers of Adults with Chronic Conditions series is scheduled for six Thursdays, Sept. 24-Oct. 29, from 2-3:30 p.m. The virtual series will provide caregivers with the tools they need to take care of themselves.

The program costs $35 per person or $40 per couple, and registration can be found online at: https://bit.ly/ptc16520.
