Rose Marie Gilliland Otcheck Shockey, 91, of Sanborn and formerly of Grinnell and Newton, passed away at Prairie View Home in Sanborn on July 29, 2020. Graveside memorial services will be held at a later date at Union Cemetery in Newton.
Rose Marie, the oldest child of Hugh and Mary (Stull) Gilliland, was born at home on Aug. 31, 1928, in Montezuma. She attended the Grinnell Public Schools.
Rose was united in marriage to Robert Raymond Otcheck at the Grinnell First Friends Church on Sept. 6, 1950. Robert passed away suddenly on Feb. 5, 1972.
Rose married Carl Gerald Shockey, of Newton, in Grinnell on Aug. 14, 1976. Carl passed away on March 27, 2017.
As a young adult Rose enjoyed roller skating and going to the movies. Before her marriage to Robert, Rose was employed at the Jacket and Glove Factory in Grinnell. After their marriage, Robert and Rose farmed together. After Robert’s passing she became a certified nurse’s aide and a certified medication aide. After her marriage to Carl, they managed apartment complexes in Indianola and Des Moines. They both enjoyed going to Drake Bulldog basketball games and pro baseball games.
Rose also enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, walking and garage sales. She also enjoyed reading and listening to music, especially gospel, country and pop music. Carl and Rose retired to Newton in 1993.
Rose is survived by her daughters: Margaret (Tom) Elgersma, of Sanborn; and Juanita (Hugo) Jaramillo, of Waxahachie, Texas; grandchildren: Meredith (Travis) Nelson and daughter, Madeline Nelson, of Whittemore; Julia (Rev. Duane) Martin and children: Abriella, Annika and Asher Martin, of Waxahachie, Texas; and Rev. Joel (Rev. Rebecca) Johnston and sons, Oliver and Theo, of Indianapolis, Ind.; step grandchildren: Jacob and Gabriella Jaramillo, of Waxahachie, Texas, Justin and Brandon Van Sant, Jason Ankeny and Robert McFall; stepson, Ron (Sara) Shockey, of Newton, and sons Andrew, of Newton, and Chris Shockey, of Denver, Colo.; sisters-in-law: Karol Gilliland, of Marshalltown; and Betty Rockhold, of Linville; as well as many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Preceding Rose in death were her parents; both husbands, Robert Otcheck and Carl Shockey; in-laws: August and Eunice Otcheck and Bryan and Bessie Shockey; daughter, Barbara Carol Otcheck; son-in-law: Randy Johnston; sister, Alice Johnson; brothers: Hugh, Jr., Charles, John, Robert and William Gilliland; sisters-in-law: Elaine Gilliland and Marge Gilliland; and step daughters: Jerilee Shockey and Judy Van Sant.
