Letters: Legion Auxiliary celebrating 100 years

To the editor:

Can you believe the American Legion Auxiliary has been in existence for 100 years? Yes, the auxiliary is celebrating 100 years this year. You see, there is something going on in 2020 besides a pandemic!

Even though the Arthur Kirchhoff Unit 288 has not held a formal meeting in 2020, the executive board has met. Our auxiliary has given monetary donations to the local Kids Backpack Program, the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., the flower fund for our local nursing home and assisted living facility, Upper Des Moines Food Pantry and other activities. Part of our mission statement is to advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth and promote patriotism, good citizenship, and peace and security.

We did not have our annual membership dinner in August. Current members and those desiring membership are asked to mail their dues of $25 to our treasurer, Renee Crist, at 141 N 3rd Ave. E, Hartley, IA 51346.

It is of utmost importance that we keep a strong American Legion Auxiliary in our community. It is our privilege to offer support to our veterans, military and their families, both at home and abroad. Until we can meet together again, please remember that we are a service organization that prides itself in the furthering of the values of what it means to be an American!

At this time we are planning on hosting our Free Veterans Breakfast on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11. Please watch the Sentinel-News for more information.
