• Trucks collide at Sanborn intersection
Two trucks collided at an intersection at the east edge of Sanborn on Oct. 8 at 4:18 p.m.
A 2007 Peterbilt tanker truck, owned by the Sanborn Fire Department and driven by Adam Roelfs, 34, of Sanborn, was struck by a 2000 Sterling semi tractor-trailer, owned by B&M Concrete of Sioux Falls, S.D. and driven by Donald Van Der Ziel, 67, of Orange City.
According to the report, the tanker was northbound on Eastern Street running in emergency status. As the tanker was attempting to cross Highway 18 at the west junction of Highway 59, it was struck by the westbound semi in the back dual tires, causing it to spin and flip onto its side.
Roelfs and Van Der Ziel were both transported to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by the Sanborn Ambulance for treatment of suspected minor injuries. Damage estimates totaled $50,000 for each truck. Roelfs was cited for Failure to Yield Upon Entering a Through Highway.
The tanker was responding to a fire northeast of Sanborn when the collision occurred. Damage was confined to a combine.
