1995: Feddersen elected mayor of Hartley

• Nov. 8, 1945

A group of businessmen and representatives from the American Legion Auxiliary and the United Service Women volunteered their services to make a canvass of Hartley for the eighth and final bond drive. Through their efforts, a total of $63,851 was pledged. The amount was $23,500 more than the quota set for Hartley.

The American Legion Auxiliary was planning to host a chicken dinner at the Legion Hall. The dinner was an annual event for many years but was discontinued during wartime rationing. Public demand caused the Auxiliary to reestablish the custom.

Albert Bartelson announced he was the new Dodge-Plymouth auto dealer for the Hartley area, and Burns Chevrolet invited area residents to see the new postwar Chevrolet models for 1946.

• Nov. 5, 1970

Barb Hansen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hansen, and Deb Walker, daughter of Mrs. Norma Sarvold, were selected as members of the 1970 All-State Band for the second consecutive year. Both were clarinet students at Hartley High School.

Earl Norton, Hartley businessman and conservationist, retrieved a bald eagle northeast of Hartley. It was estimated that the eagle was about 3 years old. Officials from the Iowa Game Commission picked up the bird in hopes of nursing it back to health and releasing it. The eagle did not appear to be seriously injured.

Eight retired Hartley businessmen were presented with lifetime memberships by the Chamber of Commerce. The honorees were August Brand, W.A. Hamilton, A.C. Hoper, Gordon H. Ogg, Harry Olhausen, Dr. F.E. Parker, Walter Schmidt and L.A. Swanson.

• Nov. 9, 1995

A majority of voters elected Merlyn Feddersen to be mayor of Hartley for the next two years. He received 314 votes while Phillip Sweeney received 225. Walter Ronnfeldt was elected to his first term on the council with 313 votes and Ron Hengeveld was re-elected with 276. Other council candidates were Darrell Buechler (252 votes) and Don Warburton (223).

Nearly 220 entries were received in the seventh and eighth grade WE-BAD drug-free poster contest. The theme of the contest which was held in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week was “Count on me to be drug-free.”

Six Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn graduates were continuing their football careers at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. They were sophomore Chris Schulz and freshmen Ryan Lux, Bryan Nieman, Troy Salazar, Andy Schierholz and Zack Spykerman.
