Mavericks celebrate Red Ribbon Week in style

Celebrating the nation's largest drug-abuse prevention campaign, Clay Central/Everly teachers and staff last week came together with their students to mark Red Ribbon Week.

Red Ribbon Week was started in 1985 and has never wavered in its mission to "support the nation's families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug-free youth."

Mavericks take this mission seriously every year by making a grand deal of the annual campaign. This year they took to a "Homecoming Style" dress-up week. Monday was Spirit Day or Wear Red Day, Tuesday was the giggle-inducing Mix-Match Day, Wednesday was Pajama Day, Thursday was Bright Colors Day and the week wrapped up with Costume Day.

Friday not only allowed the students to don their favorite Halloween gear, but it was also a day of fun as the week ended with the children rotating centers. The morning saw children painting pumpkins, decorating cookies, playing Halloween Bingo with guest Bingo caller – former CC/E High School teacher Mrs. Heikens, and a gym activity to boot. The afternoon was filled with pumpkin crafts, an owl-pellet dissection, and the creation of creepy bugs for a Mystery Doug project.

NED's Mindset Mission was intertwined throughout the week with a classroom ZOOM meeting starting the conversation on Monday. The ZOOM presentation took students on an interactive educational journey of storytelling, illusions, yo-yo tricks and humor. The message NED sends is, "Never give up, Encourage others, Do your best." Every student was gifted a yo-yo to act as a reminder that everyone makes mistakes, but if we try again then we will improve.

A fresh sense of enthusiasm and Maverick Pride rush the halls as the students took the seriousness of Red Ribbon Week to heart during these memorable five days.
