Ronald Bernard Doran, the son of Francis and Matilda (Koch) Doran, was born May 24, 1932 in Plankinton, S.D. His childhood years were spent in the Hartley and Ocheyedan areas where he graduated from eighth grade.
Ronald married Lois Schroeder on July 8, 1953 in Ocheyedan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and served until his honorable discharge. He farmed his entire career, retiring at the age of 87. He was a grain farmer and raised livestock, living in Hartley, Everly and Spencer. Ron farmed with his wife and later Steve joined the farming operation. Steve and his father farmed together for the next 29 years.
Ron enjoyed farming, going to farm auctions, dance club, card club, reading the paper and especially spending time with family. He was a member of the American Legion and Hope Lutheran Church in Everly. In his later years he moved to Spencer.
Many people knew Ron for the great pride he took in everything he owned. He always made it imperative to keep his yard looking sharp at all times. Many have seen him mowing several times a week riding his John Deere mower in the summer months. In the winter Ron would be seen watching the deer in the backyard and he enjoyed reading his daily newspapers. At the first sight of a tractor in the field Ron’s excitement would overcome him and everyone knew it was time to get started with the planting season. Ron spent many sleepless nights trying to finish planting the crop during the spring months. The fall consisted of many long hardworking days and nights for Ron, and he enjoyed every minute of harvesting the crop.
Ron passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2020, at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Bill Ruml and Ronnie Schroeder; sister-in-law, Donna Boslau and her husband, Lyle; and a nephew, Bob Doran.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Lois, of Spencer; four children: Linda (Jeremy) Keefer, of Spencer; Kayleen (Tracy) Lammers, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; LeAnn Black (Steve Johnson), of Spencer; and Steven (Pamela) Doran, of Everly; eight grandchildren: Cody, (Jamie) Lammers, Tara (Ross) Miller, Tonya (Jake) Vitense, Jamie (Steven) Rippy, Preston (Alison) Black, Trevor Black, Colton and Carissa Doran; eight great-grandchildren: Delany, Kyler and Alaina Lammers, Klaridy Miller, Henry and Remy Vitense, and Keefer and Kennedy Rippy; one brother, Duane (Betty) Doran, of Everly; one sister, Marjorie Ruml, of Lake Park; one sister-in-law, Karen Schroeder, of Akron; other relatives and many friends.
