Mrs. Tierny Rutt has been teaching for 35 years, with her first year of teaching starting as a second and third grade teacher in Casper, Wyo. Marriage brought her back to Iowa, where her husband accepted a teaching position in Emmetsburg while she was hired as Everly Community School's newest 1st grade teacher. Rutt has taught both Kindergarten and first grade at CC/E.
"Through the years, I have enjoyed teaching in a rural school setting," she said. "The communities have been supportive of their schools. The class sizes have been smaller and more attention can be given to individual students."
Rutt noted that the elementary staff always works well together and is like a family. After such an odd and unfortunate ending to last year's academic routine, she has appreciated being back in the classroom teaching her students face to face this school year.
"Teaching allows me to be with children everyday and get to know them. I watch them grow in so many different ways, not just academically, but also socially and emotionally," she said. I still love to try new things and use my creativity to engage these young children. I always try to make learning fun."
Rutt's fourth grade teacher was a big influence on her life and teaching style.
"She took the time to get to know us. Laughter was an important part of her classroom," Rutt recalled. "I remember when it was someone's birthday, she would put bright red lipstick on and give you a kiss on the cheek! I don't think we could get by with that now, but I did learn it is important to get to know your students and include some laughter in your day, making it fun."
Rutt has been along for the ride in many of the shifts CC/E has made throughout the years.
"Through it all we continue to have great community support, wonderful teachers and awesome students," she said. "I am proud to be part of the CC/E family."
