Honorary pallbearers were Mandy Knock, Stacey Knock, Merron Knock Abbas, Kelli Hartmann Davis and Tyler Knapp. Interment at a later date will take place in Baker Township Cemetery at Melvin. Sanborn Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
Marjorie Angeline “Margie” Knock, only daughter of Arthur and Rose (Schemmel) Colling, was born March 31, 1935 at Sanborn. She and her two brothers grew up in the Sanborn area where she attended the Sanborn Community School. As a member of the high school marching band, she played the sousaphone. Always a music lover, Margie taught herself to play piano and guitar. She graduated from Sanborn High School with the Class of 1952 and furthered her education at the American Institute of Commerce at Davenport.
On Sept. 4, 1955, Margie became the bride of William “Bill” Knock, of Melvin, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in May City. The couple began their life together on the Knock family farm two miles north and 1-1/2 miles east of Melvin. In 1992, their place was named a Century Farm at ceremonies held at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. In the years that followed their family grew to include four children: Jim, CoAnne, Steve and Krystal.
Along with her vegetable garden and the daily chores of a farm wife, Margie’s days were kept full caring for her growing family and attending their school activities and sporting events. When her children were grown, she utilized her post-high school education by working a few tax seasons with H&R Block, then in the business office at Baum Harmon Hospital in Primghar until her retirement.
If big things come in small packages, Margie was a living testament to that claim! She loved being outdoors. It didn’t matter whether it was gardening or golfing. Traveling was another thing she and Bill enjoyed doing together. After Margie retired they visited every county courthouse across the state of Iowa, stopping to see family, friends and historical highlights along the way. Quieter times meant playing board games, starting a new book or piecing a quilt together. Of course, she never could resist a good game of bridge. But all of this could wait if Twins baseball or Cyclone football or basketball was being broadcast.
Margie was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Melvin. She participated in all church-related events, taught Sunday school and Bible school, helped sew quilts for missions and belonged to the ALCW Circle, serving in different capacities through the years.
In 2010, Bill and Margie left the farm and moved to the town of Sanborn. Margie enjoyed the comforts of town living and looked forward to visits from their kids and grandchildren who were the light of her life.
On Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2020, Margie passed from this life at the age of 85 years, eight months and two days. She now joins loved ones who have gone before: her parents, Arthur and Rose Colling; and brother, Jim Colling.
Keeping her memory close at heart are her husband of 65 years, Bill, of Sanborn; her children: Jim Knock, of Dallas Center; CoAnne (Dave) Hartmann, of Boone; Steve (Christine) Knock, of Ankeny; and Krystal (Blaine) Moen, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her brother, Ron Colling, of Manning; other relatives and many friends.
